COVID-19 shows importance of multilateralism: S. African minister

JOHANNESBURG, (The Southern African Times) — The current COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the significance of multilateralism, South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Naledi Pandor said on Friday.

“The pandemic has awfully reminded us of the indispensable value of multilateralism,” Pandor said on the DIRCO-UN Webinar United Nations Day commemoration.

“We have seen that, as with other contemporary challenges, no country acting alone can successfully deal with the pandemic,” she added.

Pandor also emphasized the key role multilateralism should play after the pandemic.

“While commendable multilateral cooperation between states has been witnessed, the pandemic has also raised the question of how the world should be organized in its aftermath,” she said.

South Africa has reported 723,682 COVID-19 cases as of Friday, with 19,230 deaths and 653,052 recoveries, according to the country’s Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, the world has tallied 45,466,721 COVID-19 cases, with nearly 1.2 million deaths from the disease.
