Celebrating Excellence: The 2024 AfBC Top 100 African Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders in the UK

As the New Year begins, the African Business Chamber (AfBC) has unveiled its prestigious 2024 Top 100 African Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders in the UK, a tribute to exceptional individuals shaping the British economy. This annual recognition celebrates leaders whose entrepreneurial journeys, innovative leadership, and commitment to transformation continue to inspire and break barriers across various sectors.

The selection process was highly competitive, with over 425 nominations submitted. Each nominee was evaluated on their achievements, resilience, and transformative impact. The final list showcases a diverse group of professionals, reflecting the immense contribution of African talent to the UK’s economic and social fabric.

From technology and finance to healthcare, media, and legal services, the honourees represent a remarkable breadth of expertise and influence. Among the leaders recognised is Philip Orumwense CBE, Director and Chief Technology Procurement Officer at the Crown Commercial Service, whose leadership exemplifies innovation in public sector technology. Similarly, Afua Kyei, Chief Financial Officer at the Bank of England, continues to break new ground in the financial sector. Christopher Chijiutomi, Managing Director and Head of Africa at British International Investment, also stands out for his work in fostering global investment.

Healthcare leaders feature prominently, with Prof Bola Owolabi, Director of Healthcare Inequalities at NHS England, and Dr Brighton Chireka, founder of DOCBEECEE Leadership Academy, championing equitable and accessible healthcare solutions. Their work underscores the critical role African professionals play in addressing systemic challenges in the sector.

The creative industries are equally well represented, with figures such as Vanessa Kingori OBE, Managing Director for Technology, Media, and Telecoms at Google UK, and June Sarpong OBE, founder of Diversify Work, driving conversations around inclusion and innovation. Fungai Ndemera, CEO of CheckUp Health, bridges the worlds of healthcare and technology, showcasing how African entrepreneurs continue to redefine traditional industries.

The legal profession is not left behind, with trailblazers like Grace Ononiwu CBE, Director of Legal Services at the Crown Prosecution Service, and Joshua Siaw MBE, Partner at White & Case, making their mark. Engineering and technology are represented by individuals such as Yewande Akinola MBE, Vice President at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and Dr Ollie Folayan MBE, Co-Founder of AFBE-UK Scotland, who are advancing innovation and inclusion in their respective fields.

Entrepreneurs like Jeff Madzingo, CEO of Diaspora Insurance, and Conrad Mwanza, founder of CMG International Media Group, exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to supporting the African diaspora community. Farai Ian Muvuti, founder of The Southern African Times, highlights the power of media in shaping narratives and fostering connections within and beyond the African community.

This year’s list underscores the breadth and depth of African influence across diverse sectors in the UK. From finance and education to media, healthcare, and engineering, these leaders are united by their commitment to excellence, innovation, and the transformative power of their work. Their achievements reflect not only individual brilliance but also the collective resilience and determination of a community making an indelible mark on the UK economy.

The 2024 honourees will be celebrated at the AfBC Annual African Business Awards and Gala 2025, set to take place on Thursday, 29 May 2025, in London. The event will bring together business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals to honour their remarkable contributions and inspire the next generation of changemakers.

As we celebrate the achievements of these exceptional individuals, the 2024 AfBC Top 100 African Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders in the UK serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role African professionals play in driving innovation, building communities, and shaping the future. This recognition is more than a celebration of success—it is a call to continue inspiring and uplifting others while fostering inclusive growth and opportunity for all.
