In a significant development during the 15th BRICS Summit, leaders of the influential group agreed to extend invitations to six nations – Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – to become members. This expansion, set to take effect on January 1, 2024, marks a pivotal moment in BRICS’ ongoing efforts to foster a fair, inclusive, and prosperous world.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the host of the summit, announced the decision, emphasizing BRICS’ commitment to embracing new partners. “We value the interests of other countries in building the partnership of BRICS,” President Ramaphosa stated, underscoring the spirit of collaboration that drives the group.
BRICS has long been known for championing the interests of developing nations. Through this year’s summit, held under the theme “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism,” the leaders sought to deepen cooperation while promoting common goals within the Global South.
The newly invited countries expressed their enthusiasm to join BRICS. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed hailed the move as “a great moment for Ethiopia,” pledging the country’s readiness to contribute to a more inclusive global order. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan recognized the vision of BRICS leadership and expressed gratitude for the UAE’s inclusion, highlighting the importance of such alliances in addressing global challenges.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi affirmed his commitment to amplify the voices of developing nations within BRICS. He pledged to collaborate with other member countries to address issues and challenges faced by the Global South, underscoring BRICS’ emphasis on cooperation and mutual respect.
Experts and analysts from Africa also weighed in on the development. Abdel-Sattar Eshrah, secretary-general of the Egyptian-Chinese Business Council, commended BRICS for its economic prowess and ability to shape a more equitable global economic system. This sentiment was echoed by Katja Hamilton, finance, and healthcare editor at Bizcommunity, Africa’s premier B2B news site, who saw the expansion as a promising avenue for African growth.
The unanimous enthusiasm among the invited nations and the appreciation for BRICS’ core values underline the significance of this expansion. As BRICS opens its doors to new partners, it reinforces its role as a vital mechanism that resonates with emerging nations and the Global South, paving the way for a more just and prosperous world.
