Botswana has witnessed a historic political shift as the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) appears to have won a decisive victory, ending the Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP) 58-year reign. Led by human rights lawyer Duma Boko, the UDC has already secured the majority of parliamentary seats required to form the next government, based on early results.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who has governed since 2018, conceded defeat, acknowledging a “massive” loss for the BDP and pledging a peaceful transition. “I will respectfully step aside and participate in a smooth transition process ahead of inauguration,” Masisi stated, urging supporters to back the incoming administration.
Early counts indicate that the UDC has secured 25 seats, with other opposition parties, including the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) and the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), capturing additional seats. UDC supporters took to the streets of Gaborone and other cities to celebrate, marking the dawn of a new political era.
Though official confirmation is anticipated from the electoral commission later today, the preliminary outcome signals a new chapter for Botswana, a nation ready to explore new leadership after nearly six decades under the BDP.
