The Angolan government has entered into a strategic partnership with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to advance tourism investments and position the country as a competitive global destination. The agreement, signed recently in Luanda, underscores Angola’s commitment to leveraging tourism as a key driver for economic diversification and development.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, this collaboration aims to enhance Angola’s appeal to international investors while simultaneously promoting the nation’s unique tourism assets, including its vast natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse ecosystems. The initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities, support local businesses, and contribute to the broader national economy.
UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasised the organisation’s role in supporting Angola’s tourism ambitions, stating that the agreement will facilitate knowledge-sharing, technical assistance, and capacity-building initiatives. Angola’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Filipe Zau, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of fostering sustainable and inclusive tourism practices.
Analysts note that Angola’s tourism sector has significant untapped potential, particularly in eco-tourism and cultural tourism. However, challenges such as infrastructure development, connectivity, and regulatory frameworks remain critical areas requiring attention. The agreement with UNWTO is expected to address some of these challenges by providing a framework for coordinated efforts between international partners and domestic stakeholders.
Tourism experts suggest that Angola’s ambitions align with broader continental trends, as African nations increasingly turn to tourism to drive economic recovery post-COVID-19. The partnership with UNWTO could position Angola to benefit from growing global interest in Africa as a travel destination, particularly among travellers seeking authentic and less commercialised experiences.
The Angolan government has previously expressed its intention to diversify away from oil dependency, and this agreement represents another step towards achieving that goal. With the support of international organisations like UNWTO, Angola’s tourism sector could emerge as a cornerstone of the country’s economic transformation.
