Angola’s government has given the green light to its 2023-2027 National Development Plan, charting a course for the next five years with a vision of sustainable growth. During the 8th regular session of the Council of Ministers, held in Luanda, Angola’s capital, key objectives were outlined, with an emphasis on economic expansion and social progress.
Economic Growth and Population Projection
Angolan authorities have set their sights on an average growth rate of approximately 3 percent for both the nation’s population and its economy over the next five years. This plan envisions a population of 38 million by 2027, coupled with an estimated gross domestic product (GDP) of 62 trillion kwanzas (about 74.77 billion U.S. dollars). The aspiration is for these key indicators to grow annually at this steady rate, marking a concerted effort towards sustainable development.
Key Social and Economic Targets
Minister of Economy and Planning, Mario Caetano Joao, outlined several key targets during a post-meeting media address. In a bid to reduce unemployment, the plan aims to decrease the unemployment rate from 30 percent to 25 percent within the specified period. Additionally, the plan seeks to enhance the quality of life for citizens, with a goal of increasing life expectancy from 62 years to 63 years. Furthermore, the government intends to bolster education by targeting an increase in the literacy rate from 76 percent to 78 percent.
Fiscal Responsibility
In a move aligned with fiscal sustainability laws, Minister Joao also announced plans to reduce the public debt ratio from 66 percent to 60 percent. This commitment to responsible fiscal management demonstrates Angola’s dedication to long-term economic stability.
A Vision for the Future
Angola’s approval of the 2023-2027 National Development Plan reflects a bold vision for the nation’s future. With a focus on economic growth, improved living standards, and responsible fiscal management, the government is striving to position Angola as a dynamic and prosperous player on the international stage. As the nation works diligently towards achieving these goals, the world will be watching to see how Angola’s ambitious plan unfolds over the next five years.
