Anglo American Transfers Iconic Buildings to Johannesburg Educational Institutions

In a significant move demonstrating its commitment to education and community development, Anglo American officially handed over two landmark buildings in Johannesburg’s central business district (CBD) to prominent educational institutions. The formal transfer of 47 Main Street to Wits Business School (WBS) and 45 Main Street to the Maharishi Invincibility Institute underscores Anglo American’s dedication to fostering entrepreneurship and empowering underprivileged youth.

The handover ceremony of 47 Main Street, attended by notable delegates such as Wits Vice-Chancellor Professor Zeblon Vilakazi and Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad, marked a pivotal moment for the WBS. The eight-floor, 15,000 square metre building will house the “Wits Crucible,” a centre aimed at providing business education and supporting business development and growth services for youth and entrepreneurs within the Johannesburg CBD.

Professor Vilakazi highlighted the strategic importance of the new centre, stating, “The Wits Crucible will play a critical role in nurturing the next generation of business leaders and innovators. This partnership with Anglo American allows us to extend our reach and impact within the community.”

Anglo American’s CEO, Duncan Wanblad, expressed the company’s vision behind the handover. “Our commitment to education, entrepreneurship, and leaving a positive legacy in the CBD is exemplified through this initiative. We believe in empowering the next generation to drive economic growth and social progress,” he said.

Simultaneously, the iconic 45 Main Street building was transferred to the Maharishi Invincibility Institute, a leading non-profit private education institution dedicated to empowering underprivileged youth in the inner city and surrounding areas. This handover aligns with Anglo American’s broader goal of supporting educational initiatives that address social inequalities and promote sustainable development.

The Maharishi Invincibility Institute, known for its innovative approach to education, will utilise the building to expand its programmes and reach more students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The institute’s director remarked, “This new facility will significantly enhance our ability to provide quality education and training, thereby transforming the lives of many young individuals in our community.”

These transfers represent a strategic investment in the future of Johannesburg’s youth, ensuring that the historic buildings continue to serve the community in meaningful and impactful ways. By enabling educational institutions like Wits Business School and the Maharishi Invincibility Institute to expand their operations, Anglo American is fostering a legacy of empowerment and opportunity within the heart of the city.
