Amazon Announces Over 100 Job Openings in South Africa

Global eCommerce and technology powerhouse Amazon is embarking on a substantial recruitment campaign in South Africa, seeking to fill a diverse array of positions across marketing, support, and technical sectors.

Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos as an online bookstore, Amazon has evolved into a global giant in both eCommerce and technology. The company’s ties to South Africa extend back two decades, initially cemented in 2004 when Amazon Web Services (AWS) established a development centre in Cape Town under the leadership of South African tech pioneer Chris Pinkham.

Pinkham, notable for founding South Africa’s first commercial ISP, The Internetworking Company of Southern Africa (Ticsa) in 1993, played a crucial role in Amazon’s South African ventures. In 2003, he and colleague Benjamin Black proposed an ambitious plan to revamp Amazon’s retail computing infrastructure. This vision was realised with the formation of a Cape Town-based engineering team, marking the beginning of Amazon’s significant footprint in the region.

Until recently, Amazon’s operations in South Africa were primarily centred on AWS and associated technical services. However, this changed in May 2024 with the launch of Amazon South Africa’s marketplace. This new platform offers local consumers a wide range of products, with the convenience of door-to-door delivery or collection from one of 3,000 pickup points, facilitated through partnerships with local logistics firms Pargo and The Courier Guy.

Recruitment Drive in South Africa

As part of its strategic expansion, Amazon is looking to hire over 100 individuals across various locations in South Africa. The majority of these positions are based in Cape Town (98 roles), with additional opportunities in Waterfall, Gauteng (10 roles), Johannesburg (3 roles), and Craigieburn (3 roles).

The roles span multiple departments, including 32 positions in operations, IT, and support engineering, 18 in software development, and 15 in project and product management. Furthermore, Amazon is recruiting for customer service roles, buying, planning, and in-stock management, as well as marketing, sales, advertising, human resources, administrative support, and research science.

In addition, Amazon’s new retail division in South Africa is actively seeking 16 new employees, all located in Cape Town. These roles include brand managers, marketing managers, programme managers, product managers, and various vendor management positions. There are also opportunities in Amazon Entertainment, eCommerce Foundations, and Selling Partner Services.

Qualifications and Application Process

Amazon’s recruitment criteria emphasise candidates’ abilities to work collaboratively across organisations, drive consensus, and achieve results. The company values attributes such as ownership, result-orientation, and innovative thinking.

As an equal-opportunity employer, Amazon encourages applications from all sectors of society, regardless of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion, or belief. The company is particularly committed to enhancing diversity within its workforce and invites applications from South African citizens from designated groups, in line with Employment Equity principles.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the Amazon careers website to apply online. As per South African legal requirements, applicants must submit proof of their legal right to work in the country, such as a valid ID or passport and, if applicable, a work permit.

Global Impact

Amazon’s expansion in South Africa highlights the company’s commitment to tapping into diverse global talent pools and fostering innovation through local expertise. This strategic growth not only bolsters the South African economy but also enhances Amazon’s global operational capabilities.

For an international audience, Amazon’s significant investment in South Africa is a testament to the country’s burgeoning tech landscape and its potential to contribute meaningfully to the global digital economy. This move underscores the interconnectedness of the global workforce and the increasing importance of cross-border collaboration in driving technological advancements.
