Abey Kgotle Appointed Co-CEO of Mercedes-Benz South Africa

Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) has announced a pivotal leadership restructuring, naming Abey Kgotle as incoming co-Chief Executive Officer alongside Claudius Steinhoff, with effect from 1 December 2025. This dual-leadership model will succeed the current tenure of Andreas Brand, who is set to transition into a senior executive role at Mercedes-Benz AG in Stuttgart, where he will oversee the company’s global production networks.

Abey Kgotle, presently serving as Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs at MBSA, brings to the role an impressive depth of experience accumulated over more than twenty years across the mining, manufacturing, and public sectors. His professional journey includes significant board-level engagements, notably with Daimler Truck Southern Africa and Mercedes-Benz Financial Services South Africa, in addition to his current chairmanship of the Automobile Manufacturers Employers’ Organisation (AMEO). These roles have cemented his reputation as a thoughtful and effective leader with a comprehensive understanding of both the strategic and operational dimensions of the automotive sector.

The decision to appoint Kgotle reflects a broader strategic intent by the company to affirm its commitment to cultivating local executive talent capable of influencing global agendas. His co-leadership with Claudius Steinhoff—who retains his existing portfolio—aims to offer a robust management structure equipped to confront the complexities of a rapidly transforming industry. Among these challenges is the accelerating global transition toward electric mobility and sustainable manufacturing practices, areas where Kgotle’s expertise and multi-sectoral insights are expected to play a pivotal role.

Andreas Brand’s departure concludes a tenure that began in 2022, during which MBSA experienced noteworthy growth and operational refinement. Under his stewardship, the company reinforced its manufacturing capabilities and expanded its sustainable footprint, achievements that garnered commendation from both the supervisory board and industry observers. His new responsibilities within Mercedes-Benz AG affirm his continued strategic value to the broader organisation.

This leadership transition at MBSA is indicative of the evolving nature of corporate governance within multinational enterprises operating in emerging markets. By elevating Kgotle, the company not only acknowledges a proven track record in organisational leadership and stakeholder engagement but also signals a reconfiguration of its executive apparatus in response to both regional opportunities and global imperatives.

Kgotle’s appointment arrives at a crucial juncture for South Africa’s automotive landscape, which is increasingly influenced by international sustainability mandates, technological innovation, and localised growth strategies. With his nuanced understanding of policy, labour dynamics, and industrial competitiveness, Kgotle is poised to contribute meaningfully to Mercedes-Benz’s ambition to maintain its premium market positioning while cultivating new frontiers of growth in Southern Africa and beyond.

This development underscores MBSA’s strategic intent to integrate local leadership with global best practices—an approach that strengthens its adaptability and relevance in a fast-evolving sector. The decision resonates with broader industry trends that favour agile, context-aware leadership models capable of steering complex, future-oriented transformations.
