South Africa’s transition to renewable energy marked a significant milestone as Pele Green Energy, an independent power producer, announced the financial close of a solar power project in partnership with Glencore and Merafe Resources. The 100 MW Sonvanger Solar PV Power Plant, located in the Free State province, is set to bolster the nation’s clean energy agenda. The project is valued at 2.1 billion rand ($116 million).
Nedbank Group and Absa Group are providing debt financing, while Pele Green Energy contributes equity to the venture. The plant will support Glencore’s South African ferroalloys unit, a critical aspect of its decarbonisation strategy. Gqi Raoleka, Pele Green Energy’s Managing Director, expressed pride in the collaborative effort to drive sustainable energy solutions.
This development is part of a broader push within South Africa to meet its renewable energy targets and reduce reliance on coal. Pele Green Energy is increasingly prominent in the sector, with a growing portfolio of solar and wind projects in various stages of implementation.
Construction of the Sonvanger facility is expected to commence in early 2024, with operations projected to begin in 2025. This initiative not only advances environmental goals but also holds promise for local economic benefits, including job creation during construction and plant operation phases.
