World champions South Africa marked their return to the top of the global rugby rankings with a decisive 32-15 victory over Scotland at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium. Wing Makazole Mapimpi led the charge, securing two tries, but the Springboks had to fend off a determined Scottish side in the second half.
Scotland faced an early setback with the 20-minute red card dismissal of lock Scott Cummings for an illegal neck roll. While Finn Russell’s penalties kept the hosts within striking distance, Scotland was ultimately unable to secure a try. South Africa, meanwhile, strengthened their lead with Mapimpi’s double in the first half, and late contributions from fly-half Handre Pollard and forward Jasper Wiese solidified the score.
The Springboks’ bench depth was key, with several changes to the lineup from their recent Rugby Championship finale win over Argentina. Veteran lock Eben Etzebeth captained the side, supported by a seven-man forward bench that included regular skipper Siya Kolisi. Pollard’s precise play, including a strategic kick-pass to Mapimpi and his key penalty conversions, highlighted South Africa’s disciplined strategy. Scotland, fresh off a win against Fiji, failed to find a way past South Africa’s formidable defense.
This match marked South Africa’s ninth consecutive victory over Scotland. The Springboks now head to Twickenham to face an England squad seeking redemption after a close 42-37 loss to Australia.
