Zimbabwe Ends Power Cuts with Hwange Thermal Power Station Expansion – Minister

Zimbabwe’s Energy and Power Development Minister, Soda Zhemu, announced on Monday that the era of prolonged power cuts in Zimbabwe has come to an end. This follows the successful completion of the Hwange Thermal Power Station Unit 7 and 8 expansion project, which was undertaken by Chinese firm Sinohydro. The project has added an impressive 600 MW to the country’s largest coal-fired power plant.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to commission the project on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to boost its energy capacity and ensure a stable power supply. At a press conference, Minister Zhemu dismissed recent media reports predicting a return to power cuts after August, asserting that Zimbabwe now has guaranteed adequate power supplies in the short-to-medium term.

The Hwange Thermal Power Station Unit 7 has already started feeding power into the grid after successfully completing tests in June and is now commercially operational. Unit 8 is currently undergoing similar testing and is expected to be commercially available by August or September this year.

With these developments, Minister Zhemu emphasized that Zimbabwe is firmly moving away from its history of enduring long hours of load shedding, and assured the nation that the dark days of energy scarcity are now firmly in the past.

The completion of this expansion project marks a significant step towards securing Zimbabwe’s energy future and boosting economic growth. The added power capacity is expected to support industrial activities, improve living conditions, and attract more investments to the country.

The Hwange Thermal Power Station Unit 7 and 8 expansion project showcases the commitment of Zimbabwe and its international partners to address the nation’s energy challenges. With the plant’s enhanced capabilities, Zimbabwe is better positioned to meet its growing energy demands and foster sustainable development.

As Zimbabwe moves towards a more energy-secure future, it is poised to harness the potential of its resources and drive progress in various sectors. The completion of this ambitious project signifies a positive turning point for the nation’s energy landscape, and signals a new era of reliability and efficiency in power generation.

With the successful expansion of Hwange Thermal Power Station, Zimbabwe stands ready to embrace a brighter future, powered by a more robust and resilient energy infrastructure. The nation can now look forward to a sustained period of stable power supply, supporting economic growth and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
