Zimbabwe’s High Court Orders Registration of Elizabeth Valerio for Presidential Election

Zimbabwe’s High Court Orders Registration of Elizabeth Valerio for Presidential Election

Zimbabwe’s upcoming presidential election, businesswoman Elizabeth Valerio has emerged as a prominent contender after the High Court’s decisive order to register her as a candidate for the August 23 poll. As the leader of the United Zimbabwe Alliance, Valerio now stands as the only female candidate in the race, vying against incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa and ten other contenders.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) had previously disqualified Valerio on nomination day, June 21, citing partial bank proof of payment for the required nomination fees. However, the High Court ruled in favor of Valerio, mandating the ZEC to register her as a contestant and ensure her name appears on the presidential ballot paper, as reported by the news agency New Ziana.

Alec Muchadehama, Valerio’s lawyer, announced her intention to participate in the presidential race following the court’s verdict. This move adds a new dimension to the electoral landscape, as the businesswoman brings a unique perspective and experience to the political stage.

Another prominent figure in the race is former cabinet minister and political commissar in the ruling ZANU PF, Saviour Kasukuwere, who aims to contest the presidential election as an independent candidate. However, his eligibility is currently in question, as a private citizen filed an application seeking to disqualify him. The grounds for this application were based on the argument that Kasukuwere had been out of the country for more than 18 months continuously and, therefore, ceased to be a registered voter.

Although ZEC initially accepted Kasukuwere’s nomination papers, the High Court later upheld the citizen’s application, casting doubts on his ability to participate in the election. Nevertheless, Kasukuwere has appealed this ruling at the Supreme Court, leaving his candidacy in limbo until the superior court decides on his eligibility to run.

The upcoming presidential election in Zimbabwe has garnered significant attention, as citizens eagerly await the opportunity to cast their votes and shape the nation’s future. With Elizabeth Valerio’s entry into the race, the political landscape has taken an exciting turn, offering voters an additional choice and potentially reshaping the dynamics of the presidential contest.

Valerio’s presence as the only female candidate presents an opportunity for Zimbabwe to witness increased gender representation at the highest echelons of power, potentially paving the way for greater gender equality and empowerment in the country’s political sphere.

As the election day approaches, the nation’s focus remains on the presidential candidates and their visions for Zimbabwe’s future. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, with a record to defend, faces off against various contenders, each bringing their unique perspectives and aspirations for the nation.

As the electoral process unfolds, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding Saviour Kasukuwere’s eligibility. Whether he will continue as a formidable independent candidate or not, his case reflects the intricacies of electoral proceedings and the significance of adhering to the country’s electoral regulations.

In a nation striving for democratic progress, the upcoming presidential election holds immense significance. As voters prepare to head to the polls on August 23, the political landscape remains dynamic, offering hope for change, progress, and a more inclusive governance system. Elizabeth Valerio’s entry into the presidential race has added a new dimension to this critical juncture in Zimbabwe’s political history, underscoring the importance of embracing diversity and promoting active citizen participation in shaping their country’s destiny.
