FIFA Lifts Zimbabwe Football Association Suspension

The Bureau of the FIFA Council has made the decision to lift the suspension that had been imposed on the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) since February 2022. Simultaneously, FIFA has appointed a capable normalisation committee, tasked with undertaking crucial responsibilities aimed at revitalizing and reorganizing the association.

The newly formed normalisation committee comprises esteemed individuals from the Zimbabwean sporting community. Leading the committee as chairman is Mr Lincoln C. Mutasa, accompanied by Mr Sikhumbuzo Ndebele, Ms Rosemary Mugadza, and Ms Nyasha Tashinga Sanyamandwe as committee members. However, their official assumption of duties is contingent upon the completion of an eligibility check by the FIFA Review Committee, in accordance with the FIFA Governance Regulations.

Charged with several key objectives, the normalisation committee’s primary tasks include assuming control of ZIFA’s day-to-day affairs, implementing a comprehensive restructuring of the organization’s administration, and establishing a collaborative agreement in consultation with FIFA, the Ministry of Sport/the SRC, and ZIFA. This agreement will outline the specific responsibilities and objectives of each party, with particular emphasis on addressing the critical issue of sexual harassment.

Furthermore, the committee is entrusted with the critical duty of reviewing and aligning the ZIFA Statutes and Electoral Code with the requirements and provisions stipulated by the FIFA Statutes. To ensure compliance, the revised Statutes and Electoral Code must be adopted by the ZIFA Congress under the committee’s oversight. Additionally, the normalisation committee will act as the electoral committee, responsible for organizing and conducting the elections of a new ZIFA Board based on the updated regulations.

Another vital aspect of their responsibilities includes overseeing a seamless financial transition to the incoming ZIFA Board. This meticulous process aims to guarantee that the new leadership inherits a well-structured and transparent financial system.

The tenure of the normalisation committee will persist until all assigned duties are satisfactorily fulfilled. FIFA has set a deadline of June 30, 2024, at the latest for the committee to complete their tasks, underscoring their commitment to reinstating proper governance and operational frameworks within ZIFA.

FIFA’s decision heralds a moment of great significance for Zimbabwean football, presenting an opportunity for a fresh start and a path toward enhanced governance and development. The football community and stakeholders eagerly anticipate the successful execution of the normalisation committee’s mandate, eagerly awaiting positive transformations within ZIFA and the national football landscape as a whole.
