Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Ready to Receive Nomination Papers for General Elections

In preparation for the upcoming harmonised elections in Zimbabwe on August 23, the country’s electoral body, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), has announced its readiness to accept nomination papers from candidates. The Nomination Courts are scheduled to convene on Wednesday to receive applications from individuals vying for positions in the presidential, National Assembly, and local authorities.

To facilitate the nomination process, the commission  (ZEC) has established 103 nomination centers across the country where candidates can file their papers. Additionally, some candidates have taken advantage of the option to pre-submit their nomination papers online, as confirmed by Utoile Silaigwana, the Chief Elections Officer of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

The Nomination Courts will be in session from 10 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) until 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) on Wednesday. It is important to note that no nomination papers will be accepted after the stipulated closing time. ZEC have assured the Zimbabwean public a commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process by adhering to the prescribed deadlines and procedures.

Among the candidates participating in the upcoming elections is the incumbent President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is seeking re-election for a second five-year term. Mnangagwa is expected to launch the ruling party, ZANU-PF’s manifesto and election campaign on Saturday in Chipinge, Manicaland Province. The president’s campaign will likely focus on highlighting the achievements of his administration and outlining his vision for the future.

On the opposition front, Nelson Chamisa, the leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change, has confirmed that he has successfully pre-submitted his nomination papers. Chamisa is a prominent figure in Zimbabwean politics and is expected to present a strong challenge to President Mnangagwa in the upcoming elections.

According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, a total of 6,598,523 voters have been registered to participate in the general elections. The electoral body remains committed to ensuring a smooth and inclusive electoral process, allowing every eligible citizen to exercise their right to vote.

As the nomination process begins and candidates submit their papers, the political landscape in Zimbabwe will take shape, setting the stage for an engaging and competitive electoral campaign leading up to the August elections. The Zimbabwean people, along with the international community, will closely monitor the process to assess its fairness and transparency, with hopes of a peaceful and democratic outcome that reflects the will of the voters.
