Zimbabwean Head of State, His Excellency President Dr. ED Mnangagwa has officially proclaimed the date for the upcoming general elections in Zimbabwe. The announcement, made through Proclamation 4 of 2023, marks a crucial moment in the country’s political landscape. President Mnangagwa has declared 23rd August 2023 as the day when Zimbabweans will exercise their democratic rights and participate in the electoral process.
This proclamation is seen as a pivotal step towards fostering transparency and accountability in the country’s political system.
President Mnangagwa, while making the announcement, underscored the significance of free and fair elections as the bedrock of a vibrant democracy. Additionally, the proclamation also establishes 2nd October 2023 as the potential date for a run-off in the event that the presidential election requires a second round. This provision, in accordance with Section 38(1)(a)(iii) of the Electoral Act, aims to ensure a conclusive outcome for the presidential race, leaving no room for ambiguity or disputes.
In a bid to strengthen traditional governance structures, President Mnangagwa has further set 3rd August 2023 as the day for Provincial Assemblies of Chiefs to convene and elect members of the Chiefs Council. This decision, aligned with Section 120(1)(b) and (c) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, along with Section 38(3) of the Electoral Act Ch 2:13 and Section 35 of the Traditional Leaders Act Ch 29:17, seeks to enhance the representation of traditional leaders and safeguard their interests across the nation.
