Friendly investors will be granted Zimbabwean citizenship as part of the government’s efforts to lure investment, a cabinet minister has said.
“President Emmerson Mnangagwa is once again going to make history by making Zimbabwe one of the first African countries to offer a pathway to citizenship through investment in Zimbabwe,” Zimbabwe’s Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa was quoted as saying on Friday by the Herald, a state-owned daily newspaper.
“Many citizens of the globe, and more importantly, the African diaspora, who are scattered in various corners of the world, are ready to come home to Africa, starting right here in Zimbabwe,” Mutsvangwa said.
Mutsvangwa said meaningful investment into Zimbabwe will be a pathway to citizenship, adding that the Zimbabwean government will provide incentives to investors.
The minister outlined some of the sectors in need of investment, including mining sub-sectors of iron ore and lithium, energy and agriculture.
Among the foreign investors, Chinese investors have made significant investments into Zimbabwe’s lithium, steel, energy and transport infrastructure in recent years.
“We have new industrial parks on the books. Ports, rail, road and border logistics are on the drawing board. There is more planned to meet burgeoning new industrial capacity,” she said.
