Zimbabwe is embarking on a transformative journey towards a sustainable, data-driven future with the adoption of Earth Observation (EO) technologies. This cutting-edge system promises to revolutionize environmental monitoring, resource management, and stimulate significant economic growth for the nation.
EO technologies harness the capabilities of satellites and sensors to provide invaluable data on the Earth’s surface. Industry estimates forecast substantial economic growth potential through EO adoption. By 2030, global GDP growth attributed to EO technologies could reach an astounding US$3 trillion, with Zimbabwe poised to claim its share of this expanding market.
Davis Marapira, Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development (MALWFRD), emphasized the critical insights EO technologies offer into pressing global challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and changing weather patterns. Unlike traditional data collection methods, EO provides a cost-effective and efficient means of comprehensively understanding our planet’s health.
“In the agriculture sector, we stand to reap significant benefits from EO implementation. Utilizing satellite imagery and specialized sensors, farmers will gain unprecedented insights into their land, including soil health, crop performance, and optimal irrigation and harvesting times. Armed with such data, farmers can optimize crop management practices, potentially leading to higher yields, improved efficiency, and reduced environmental impact,” said Marapira.
Pfungwa Kunaka, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, highlighted the potential benefits for the mining industry. “The mining industry, a cornerstone of our economy, can leverage EO for enhanced efficiency and sustainability. The system enables real-time monitoring of mining activities, detection of mineral extraction, and identification of potential environmental risks such as pipeline leaks.”
Additionally, EO technologies will enable the Zimbabwean government to conduct independent aerial surveys of minerals using the latest technology, ensuring transparency and fairness when issuing licenses to both local and foreign investors.
To maximize the benefits of EO technologies, Zimbabwe recognizes the necessity of cultivating international collaborations. Partnering with established space agencies and research institutions will provide access to advanced technologies, accelerate the development of domestic EO expertise, and drive innovation.
Zimbabwe’s adoption of EO technologies marks a significant step towards a sustainable future, offering the potential for economic growth, improved resource management, and enhanced environmental stewardship.
