The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has launched 21 infrastructure projects valued at approximately 45.8 million United States dollars, aimed at strengthening the country’s southern tourism circuit. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba during a formal event held on Wednesday, marking a continued effort to develop regional tourism and conservation assets across southern Tanzania.
The initiative, representing an investment of 114.62 billion Tanzanian shillings, is intended to expand the sector’s contribution to the national economy by improving tourism accessibility, infrastructure and conservation capabilities. Among the completed projects is the Mtemere airstrip, located in Nyerere National Park, which is expected to improve connectivity within the region. Additional developments include new park entry gates, information centres, ranger outposts, ecological monitoring stations, picnic areas, hostels and guest houses.
Prime Minister Nchemba underscored the importance of maintaining these facilities to ensure long-term sustainability. He also highlighted government investment in patrol vehicles and heavy machinery aimed at supporting conservation and anti-poaching operations. Further, he called for collaboration between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and Air Tanzania Company Limited to maximise the utility of the new airstrip.
The southern circuit, which includes protected areas such as Ruaha National Park and the Udzungwa Mountains, has historically seen lower levels of infrastructure investment compared to the more frequently visited northern circuit. This initiative is part of a broader policy effort to address such disparities while encouraging greater private sector participation in tourism and conservation through supportive frameworks.
By expanding access to southern Tanzania’s lesser-known ecological and cultural sites, the government aims to create conditions for economic diversification, regional development and environmental protection. The focus remains on promoting inclusive growth while preserving the integrity of the natural environment.
The government has stated its commitment to encouraging responsible tourism through infrastructure and regulatory measures, with an emphasis on locally anchored development. As such, the projects reflect a wider regional trend toward investing in sustainable tourism strategies that prioritise local engagement and long-term ecological balance.
