Tanzania has solidified its stature as one of Africa’s premier tourism destinations, claiming four distinguished accolades at the 31st annual World Travel Awards (WTA). Held in Kenya, this prestigious event brought together leaders and innovators in the global travel industry, recognising those who have excelled in redefining the tourism landscape across Africa. Tanzania’s victories not only reaffirm its allure but also highlight its commitment to conserving its natural heritage and enhancing its global tourism appeal.
The East African nation was recognised as Africa’s Leading Destination 2024, a title that underscores its growing prominence on the world stage. In parallel, the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) was awarded the coveted title of Africa’s Leading Tourist Board, reflecting its strategic leadership and effective promotion of Tanzania’s unparalleled offerings. These honours further cement Tanzania’s reputation as a dynamic force in the continent’s tourism sector.
Two of Tanzania’s most iconic attractions, the Serengeti National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro, were also lauded. The Serengeti National Park retained its title as Africa’s Leading National Park for the sixth consecutive year, maintaining its dominance over formidable competitors such as Botswana’s Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. This recognition further establishes the Serengeti as the quintessential safari destination, renowned for its vast savannahs and the unparalleled spectacle of the Great Migration.
Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and an enduring symbol of adventure, was named Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction. This is the sixth consecutive time the mountain has claimed the title, rising above other iconic landmarks such as Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza and South Africa’s Table Mountain. Kilimanjaro’s enduring appeal lies not only in its majestic height but also in the diverse ecosystems that make it one of the most sought-after trekking destinations in the world.
The awards ceremony, held in a VIP reception, also saw significant wins for other African nations. Kenya, as host, was duly honoured, with Diani Beach named Africa’s Leading Beach Destination, while Nairobi secured the title of Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination. These accolades highlight Kenya’s diverse tourism offerings, from idyllic coastal retreats to bustling urban centres that cater to international business travellers.
Elsewhere, Morocco also shone with the St Regis La Bahia Blanca Resort in Tamuda Bay winning Africa’s Leading New Resort, underscoring the country’s burgeoning luxury tourism sector.
Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) spokesperson, Catherine Mbena, expressed the organisation’s pride in receiving such prestigious recognitions. “We are beyond proud to have claimed four major awards at the World Travel Awards, each representing the unrivalled beauty and spirit of our nation,” Mbena stated. She emphasised that these accolades serve as a testament to the success of ongoing conservation efforts and Tanzania’s enduring appeal as a premier destination for safari enthusiasts.
The annual World Travel Awards, established in 1993, are widely regarded as the gold standard in the global travel industry. With regional events held across key destinations, the Africa gala is part of the broader WTA Grand Tour 2024. This tour includes ceremonies in major cities such as Berlin, Dubai, and Manila, culminating in the Grand Final in Madeira, Portugal, where global champions across various categories will be announced on 24 November 2024.
Tanzania’s continued success at the World Travel Awards reaffirms its place on the global tourism map, with its celebrated national parks, world-class attractions, and strategic promotion efforts positioning it as a leader in the African tourism industry.
