In this week’s edition of African Start-Up Tuesday, we turn our spotlight on five remarkable African start-ups that are making waves with their innovative solutions and dedication to driving positive change across the continent. From healthcare to renewable energy, these entrepreneurs are leading the way in addressing pressing challenges and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
1.OUR Space – Winner of the Best Deep Tech and AI Start-up Award, OUR Space, co-founded by Sanelisiwe Njobe from South Africa, is revolutionizing the way we approach urban planning. Their AI-powered platform utilises data analytics to optimise urban spaces, promoting sustainability and enhancing quality of life in cities.

2. Kaloola – Represented by Eben Mbhele of South Africa, Kaloola clinched the Best Green Economy Start-up Award for their innovative approach to waste management. Kaloola’s technology converts organic waste into biogas and organic fertilizer, providing clean energy and reducing environmental pollution.

3. Boardroom – South African start-up Boardroom, co-founded by Serisha Barrat, received the Best Enterprise Start-up Award for their innovative corporate governance solutions. Their platform streamlines board meetings and decision-making processes, improving efficiency and transparency in organisations.

4. Empiras Global Academy – Co-founded by Gugu and Lulu Ntuli from South Africa, Empiras Global Academy was recognized with the Best FemTech Start-up Award for their groundbreaking approach to women’s health education. Their digital platform provides comprehensive health education tailored to women’s specific needs, empowering them to take control of their well-being.

5. Shamba Pride – Founded by Samuel Munguti, Shamba Pride received the Most Promising Entrepreneur Award for their efforts in revolutionising agriculture in Africa. Their platform leverages data analytics and IoT technology to optimize farming practices, increasing productivity and sustainability in the agricultural sector.
Each of these start-ups embodies the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship, and their contributions to their respective fields are truly inspiring.
Moreover, we are thrilled to announce that all five winning start-ups have secured spots at the AfricArena grand finale, which will take place in Cape Town in December. This achievement is a testament to their potential for growth and impact on the global stage.
In addition to their accolades, each winning start-up received 25,000 AWS Activate Credits, providing them with valuable resources to further develop and scale their solutions.
