South African Rappers Maglera Doe Boy & Blxckie Nominated for BET Award

South African hip-hop continues to soar on the international stage, with two of its brightest stars, Maglera Doe Boy and Blxckie, securing nominations for the prestigious BET Hip Hop Awards 2024. Both artists have been nominated for the “Best International Flow” category, a title that recognizes the impact of global talent in hip-hop. Sharing the category with heavyweights like Nigeria’s Burna Boy and ODUMODUBLVCK, these nominations reflect a significant moment for South African rap and African hip-hop at large.

Blxckie has been a force to be reckoned with since the release of his debut album B4Now in 2021. That project not only shook up the local scene but also earned him the title of MTV Base’s “Hottest MC” in the same year, a recognition he has now claimed twice. His meteoric rise in the industry has been fueled by chart-topping tracks like “Sika,” “David,” and “Joy,” which have resonated with both local and international audiences. His unique sound and versatile flow have positioned him as one of the most exciting young talents in the game, and his trajectory shows no signs of slowing down.

Maglera Doe Boy, with his gritty and powerful storytelling, is carving out his own space in the global rap scene. Known for his poetic depictions of township life and socio-political commentary, Maglera’s music offers raw, thought-provoking reflections on South African realities. His nomination for “Best International Flow” solidifies his status as a lyrical heavyweight whose authentic voice speaks to the struggles and triumphs of everyday life. His ability to balance personal narratives with broader societal issues has earned him a loyal fanbase and growing recognition beyond South Africa’s borders.

These nominations signal a new era for South African hip-hop, as both Blxckie and Maglera represent a generation that is pushing the genre into new territory, blending local influences with global appeal. The fact that three African artists – Maglera, Blxckie, and ODUMODUBLVCK – are competing in this category is a testament to the increasing prominence of African hip-hop on the world stage.

The 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards will take place in Las Vegas on October 8, 2024, and will air on BET (DStv Channel 129) on Wednesday, October 16 at 03:00 CAT. Hosted by Fat Joe for the third time, the event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with the rapper teasing an exciting show in a brand-new city. “We’re going to be in a new city, but the excitement and entertainment will be bigger than ever,” Fat Joe said in a statement, underscoring the high expectations for this year’s ceremony.

Burna Boy, who is also up for the “Best Live Performance” award, further strengthens the African presence at the event, emphasizing the continent’s growing cultural influence on the global music scene. African artists, once considered peripheral in international hip-hop, are now front and center, redefining the genre with their unique sounds, styles, and stories.

Monde Twala, Senior Vice President at BET Africa, spoke about the importance of these nominations, noting how they reflect Africa’s cultural richness and the exceptional talent the continent has to offer. “We are thrilled to see African hip-hop continuing its rise on the global stage, with Burna Boy, ODUMODUBLVCK, Maglera Doe Boy, and Blxckie representing the diversity and vibrancy of African hip-hop,” Twala said. “At BET, we are proud to provide a platform that amplifies these voices, showcasing the immense talent Africa has to offer.”

With both Maglera and Blxckie in the running for “Best International Flow,” the world is watching South African hip-hop as it continues to make waves and claim its rightful place in global music. This is more than just a moment – it’s a movement that signals the lasting impact of African talent in the world of hip-hop.
