Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, a flagship brand under Marriott International, is poised to establish a landmark presence in Angola with the launch of a new luxury hotel in Luanda, scheduled to open in early 2026. This strategic development stems from a formal agreement signed between Marriott International and the Angolan Sovereign Fund (Fundo Soberano de Angola – FSDEA), announced on 25 June 2025 during the US-Africa Summit held in Luanda.
The forthcoming Sheraton Luanda will feature 326 rooms and will be situated along the scenic Bay of Luanda, positioning it at the heart of the city’s commercial, diplomatic, and cultural districts. This development aims not only to expand the hospitality offering in the capital city but also to enhance Angola’s appeal as an emerging tourism destination on the continent.
In terms of amenities, the hotel will offer a comprehensive suite of services including an all-day dining restaurant, multiple bars, eleven flexible spaces for meetings and events, a fitness centre, spa, swimming pool, Sheraton Club, and various collaborative work and lounge areas—aligning with the brand’s global standards of excellence.
Angola’s Minister of Tourism, Márcio Daniel, who was present at the signing of the agreement, highlighted the importance of the Sheraton brand’s entry into Angola. He described the initiative as “a strategic milestone” that elevates hospitality standards, fosters international investment, and reinforces Angola’s competitive edge within the global tourism market.
Echoing this sentiment, Armando Manuel, Chairman of the Board of Directors at FSDEA, emphasised that the partnership reflects a deliberate strategy to strengthen Angola’s portfolio of national assets. He noted that the venture supports the country’s ambition to align with progressive trends in the African hotel sector while promoting sustainable, high-quality investment in hospitality infrastructure.
The agreement was witnessed by several high-level Angolan officials including Augusta Frederico Fortes, Secretary of State for Commerce; Augusto Kalikemala, Secretary of State for Tourism; Agostinho Van-Dúnem, Ambassador to the United States; Allícia Santos, Director of the Institute for Tourism Development (INFOTUR); and key representatives from FSDEA and Marriott International.
This project aligns with a broader government strategy to diversify Angola’s economy, traditionally reliant on oil, by investing in sectors such as tourism and services. The introduction of a global brand like Sheraton is expected to bolster investor confidence and encourage further development in the Angolan hospitality landscape.
