SAT 40 Under 40: Honouring the People Shaping the Region’s Future

For too long, recognition has revolved around the same names, the same cities, and the same industries. But across Southern Africa, a quieter revolution is taking place — led by young visionaries building the region’s future with care, courage, and clarity.

They are running climate projects in Mozambique. Preserving language through film in Lesotho. Launching public health platforms in Zambia. Organising, healing, and innovating — often without recognition, and almost always without fanfare.

SAT 40 Under 40 was created to change that.

It is an editorial initiative by The Southern African Times that recognises not just visibility, but value. It honours changemakers whose work is rooted in purpose and resonates beyond borders — building a future that belongs to all of us.

What Is SAT 40 Under 40?

SAT 40 Under 40 is a landmark annual list spotlighting 40 under-40 changemakers who are redefining leadership, legacy, and cultural impact across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

With 16 countries and a population exceeding 400 million, Southern Africa is a centre of influence. Yet leadership from this region remains underreported, underresourced, or entirely undocumented.

This list is an editorial commitment to redress that imbalance. From Lusaka to Antananarivo, Gaborone to Lilongwe, we are documenting a generation of visionaries whose impact deserves to be named, resourced, and remembered.

“Southern Africa is home to some of the most brilliant minds, builders, and movement-makers on the continent — yet our stories don’t always travel. SAT 40 Under 40 was created to change that. These are the visionaries building quietly and consistently — across sectors, across borders, and often without recognition.”

— Korrine Sky, Editor-at-Large, The Southern African Times

Who We’re Looking For

This list is not for those with the biggest platforms, it’s for those creating lasting transformation.

We are curating 40 individuals who demonstrate:

● Bold vision and grounded leadership
● Measurable contributions to their field or community
● A consistent track record of excellence, originality, and ethical action
● Commitment to transforming culture, systems, or structures — including alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Eligibility Criteria:

● Under 40 years old as of 31 December 2025
● Citizen, national, or long-term resident of a SADC country
(Diaspora members with direct impact or heritage ties are also eligible)
● Minimum 2–3 years of demonstrable impact — through innovation, organising, advocacy, creative work, or institutional change

Eligible countries: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, DRC, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Sectors We Celebrate

SAT 40 Under 40 is cross-sector, values-driven, and culturally grounded. We honour those creating long-term change in:

● Builders
Founders, entrepreneurs, and designers building solutions that serve people — not just profit.
● Culture Shapers
Artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and curators preserving memory and redefining identity.
● Civic Leaders
Advocates, organisers, and NGO leaders advancing justice, access, and equity.
● Innovators
Educators, scientists, researchers, and healthcare pioneers solving urgent regional challenges.
● Futurists & Tech Disruptors
Coders, AI specialists, technologists, and digital architects building ethical, inclusive futures — from blockchain to biotech, and smart systems to storytelling.
● Climate & Environmental Stewards
Climate activists, conservationists, agritech innovators, and green economy leaders protecting the region’s ecological future.
● Media Voices
Journalists, editors, broadcasters, and digital storytellers shaping how the region is seen and heard.
● Public Sector Trailblazers
Young policy shapers and civil servants rebuilding trust and transforming governance from within.
● Diaspora Connectors
Southern Africans abroad investing back through capital, creativity, infrastructure, or knowledge — building bridges across borders.

Whether their names are in headlines or whispered on community walls — we honour those doing the work that lasts.

What Makes SAT 40 Under 40 Different?

This isn’t just a list. It’s a living archive. A regional record of excellence. A platform of legacy.

● Regional by Design
We intentionally highlight leaders from all 16 SADC countries — not just economic hubs.
● Editorial, Not Algorithmic
Each honouree is profiled with care, context, and rigour by our editorial team.
● Beyond the List
Honourees join a growing community of thinkers and builders for collaboration and long-term impact.
● Led by Values
We prioritise equity, imagination, ethics, and care. Influence alone is not enough.

You will need:

A summary of the nominee’s background, work, and leadership.
