Powerfleet Inc., a United States-headquartered provider of artificial intelligence of things software solutions for mobile asset and fleet management, has confirmed it will deliver a wide-scale technology deployment for the Government of South Africa, encompassing real-time vehicle visibility and integrated video intelligence across departments operating more than 100,000 vehicles.
The agreement, which is poised to become one of the most extensive deployments in the company’s global portfolio, will span a minimum five-year term and generate recurring revenue through software licensing and technical support services. The rollout will follow a phased implementation schedule, with initial department participation reportedly exceeding the firm’s internal projections.
This contract is expected to significantly strengthen Powerfleet’s ongoing collaboration with MTN Group, one of Africa’s foremost telecommunications operators. MTN will provide secure enterprise connectivity and managed infrastructure services essential to enabling the consistent delivery of Powerfleet’s AIoT platform across all participating government departments.
Steve Towe, Chief Executive of Powerfleet, stated that the agreement is indicative of a broader shift in public sector appetite for data-led transport management solutions. According to Towe, such engagements frequently evolve into enduring partnerships, as government departments increasingly rely on analytics to inform operational and strategic decisions.
Tumi Chamayou, Chief Enterprise Business Officer at MTN, noted that the collaboration will contribute to delivering enterprise-grade digital infrastructure to large-scale public entities. Chamayou described the partnership as a cornerstone in the modernisation of Africa’s transport and logistics capabilities, highlighting the role of secure digital ecosystems in enabling more transparent and efficient governance.
While financial details of the contract remain undisclosed, installation is expected to commence in the middle of the calendar year, with revenue generation tied to the pace of onboarding across departments and the number of vehicles integrated into the system.
The development reflects the growing importance of technological sovereignty and infrastructure capability across the African continent. With many African governments prioritising digitisation agendas, public sector uptake of fleet intelligence technologies is increasingly seen as a foundation for broader economic resilience and service delivery efficiency.
In this context, the partnership also exemplifies the value of regional collaboration between global technology providers and African telecommunications institutions. Such agreements not only facilitate technological modernisation but also support the strengthening of local digital ecosystems, enabling African institutions to design, operate and adapt mobility solutions in alignment with national development objectives.
Powerfleet is listed on both the NASDAQ and Johannesburg Stock Exchange, trading under the tickers AIOT and PWR respectively. MTN Group, headquartered in Johannesburg, remains a central player in Africa’s digital transformation, with operations across multiple African countries and growing involvement in public sector infrastructure projects.
By anchoring this initiative within South Africa’s public sector and leveraging regional enterprise expertise, the agreement signals the emergence of a more integrated, data-informed approach to public mobility that foregrounds long-term institutional partnerships over short-term technology transactions.
