Orion Minerals has confirmed that a US$40m financing tranche from commodities group Glencore has become unconditional, clearing a key financial hurdle for the development of the Uppers Mine at its Prieska Copper Zinc Mine in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.
The Australian-listed mining company said in a filing to the Australian Securities Exchange that the first drawdown is expected by the end of October 2026, with initial production from Uppers targeted for the end of 2027.
The financing forms part of a broader US$250m prepayment facility agreed in February 2026 between Glencore and Orion’s subsidiary, Prieska Copper Zinc Mine (Pty) Ltd. The arrangement is linked to the future sale and delivery of copper and zinc concentrates from the project.
Under the agreement, the initial US$40m tranche will finance construction and the start-up of Uppers. A second tranche of US$210m is intended to support development of the Deeps deposit, although its availability remains subject to separate conditions, including arrangements for third-party funding.
The project represents part of Orion’s strategy to establish a producing copper and zinc operation in South Africa, a country seeking to sustain its mining industry while responding to changing global demand for industrial metals.
The Northern Cape has an established mining base, but the commercial viability of new developments depends on factors including capital availability, infrastructure, construction costs and the ability to bring production online according to schedule.
Glencore’s financing is structured as a prepayment linked to future mineral deliveries rather than an unconditional cash investment without repayment obligations. The agreement includes security arrangements and commercial terms tied to concentrate sales.
Although the removal of conditions on Tranche A advances the project towards construction, the targeted production date remains a company forecast rather than a guarantee. Progress will depend on execution of the development programme and the operational requirements of bringing the mine into production.
For South Africa, the project adds to efforts to develop domestic mineral resources and expand participation in global copper and zinc supply chains.
