Mozambique and Timor-Leste have taken significant steps to bolster their bilateral cooperation by signing three landmark agreements on Friday. The agreements, encompassing political and diplomatic consultations, hydrocarbons and mining, and science, technology, and higher education, signify a new chapter in their collaborative efforts.
The signing ceremony, held at the Presidential Palace in Maputo, was witnessed by Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi and the visiting Timor-Leste President, Jose Ramos-Horta. This event followed comprehensive discussions between the two countries’ delegations, underscoring the strategic importance of the partnerships.
“These agreements are the culmination of extensive discussions and political consultations,” President Nyusi stated, highlighting the strategic importance of the partnerships. He noted that Mozambique aims to learn from Timor-Leste’s experience in establishing a sovereign wealth fund, an area where Timor-Leste has demonstrated considerable expertise.
President Ramos-Horta elaborated on the success of Timor-Leste’s Sovereign Fund, which is managed by the Central Bank and insulated from direct government access. “The fund was initially established with 200 million U.S. dollars and has grown to approximately 20 billion U.S. dollars,” he explained, underscoring its effective management.
In addition to the signing ceremony, President Ramos-Horta received the Key to the City of Maputo from Mayor Razaque Manhique, further symbolising the warm relations between the two nations. The President is also scheduled to meet with Esperanca Bias, President of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique.
This visit marks President Jose Ramos-Horta’s first trip to Mozambique since assuming office in 2022, signalling a strong commitment to deepening the ties between the two countries.
The agreements are seen as a substantial move towards enhancing cooperation in crucial sectors. The pact on hydrocarbons and mining is particularly significant, given Mozambique’s rich natural resources and Timor-Leste’s expertise in managing resource wealth. The science, technology, and higher education agreement is expected to foster innovation and capacity building, benefiting both nations.
Observers note that these developments could pave the way for increased economic collaboration and shared prosperity. The focus on political and diplomatic consultations reflects a mutual desire to strengthen their political dialogue and coordinate more closely on regional and international issues.
As Mozambique and Timor-Leste look towards the future, these agreements serve as a foundation for a robust and dynamic partnership, promising mutual benefits and closer ties between the two countries.
