Kenya Leverages Public-Private Partnerships to Boost Adventure Tourism

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has announced a strategic initiative to enhance the country’s adventure tourism sector through robust public-private partnerships. This move aims to attract more visitors by capitalising on Kenya’s diverse and adaptable tourism offerings, which have shown resilience and broad economic benefits for local communities.

June Chepkemei, Chief Executive Officer of KTB, highlighted the untapped potential of adventure tourism in Kenya. “Beyond our well-known beach and wildlife attractions, there are hidden gems that we can creatively promote, particularly through off-the-beaten-track locations during off-peak seasons,” Chepkemei stated in a press release from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

Chepkemei cited recent statistics demonstrating the growth and resilience of adventure travel, especially as global tourism rebounds from the impacts of COVID-19. She emphasised the varied tourism experiences available in Kenya, including eco-friendly safaris, birding, hiking, and water sports. “These activities not only attract diverse visitors but also help distribute tourism revenue more evenly across our economy and communities,” she noted.

Her remarks were made during the inaugural meeting of the Kenya Adventure Tourism Product Club, a newly established platform by KTB designed to foster collaboration in marketing Kenya’s adventure tourism offerings. The club comprises members from both the private and public sectors, encompassing a wide range of activities such as running, kitesurfing, mountain climbing, trekking, canyoning, and abseiling.

The KTB envisions the club as a pivotal mechanism for promoting adventure tourism within the country. By uniting product owners and stakeholders, the club aims to position adventure experiences as a significant niche with substantial growth potential.

According to KTB, the global adventure tourism market is currently valued at over 450 billion U.S. dollars, indicating significant opportunities for destinations like Kenya. With the global tourism sector on a path to full recovery, the emphasis on adventure tourism could be a key driver for attracting international visitors and stimulating local economies.

This initiative underscores KTB’s commitment to diversifying Kenya’s tourism portfolio and ensuring sustainable economic benefits for its communities through innovative and collaborative approaches.
