South African carrier FlySafair has been recognised as the most punctual airline in the Middle East and Africa and, unofficially, the most on-time airline globally, according to the Cirium 2025 On-Time Performance Review.
The report, based on over 25 million data points gathered from more than 600 sources, remains one of the world’s most credible measures of airline reliability and efficiency. Cirium defines “on-time” performance as a flight arriving within fifteen minutes of its scheduled time.
In 2025, FlySafair achieved an on-time performance score of 91.06 percent—slightly lower than its 2024 rate of 93.82 percent—yet still the highest among all airlines reviewed worldwide. This positioned the airline ahead of the official global leader, Aeromexico, which achieved 90.02 percent.
Despite not qualifying for Cirium’s global list—restricted to airlines operating across at least three international regions—FlySafair’s operational consistency earned it the highest punctuality rate of any carrier included in the report.
According to Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair, this achievement underscores the dedication of the airline’s staff and its culture of operational precision:
“With sustained challenges in air traffic management, fuel supply certainty, and airport infrastructure—including baggage handling systems that sit outside an airline’s direct control—maintaining reliable on-time performance has required extraordinary coordination and discipline,” Gordon said. “This result is a credit to the dedication of our teams.”
FlySafair’s success is built on meticulous scheduling, 30-minute turnaround targets, and the use of real-time data analytics to manage disruptions. The airline’s systems allow for rapid recovery from delays, a crucial advantage in South Africa’s constrained aviation environment.
This recognition also comes amid broader transformation in South Africa’s aviation industry. Following the restructuring of the domestic market post-COVID-19, the country now has five principal carriers: South African Airways (SAA), Lift, FlySafair, CemAir, and Airlink.
Since its establishment in 2014, FlySafair has been consistently recognised for operational excellence. In 2025, it was also awarded the “Best Airline” title at the South African Civil Aviation Authority’s Excellence Awards and the Skytrax Award for “Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa”.
Beyond national recognition, FlySafair’s performance represents a broader African success story—one that redefines the global narrative of aviation leadership. It demonstrates that African carriers can compete at the highest levels of operational discipline and reliability, challenging long-held assumptions of where global excellence originates.
Two other South African airlines, Airlink and South African Airways, also appeared in Cirium’s top 25 rankings for 2025, signalling the region’s growing credibility in global aviation performance metrics.
