Five Southern African Startups Recognised at AfricArena Johannesburg Summit

Five innovative startups from Southern Africa have emerged as winners at the prestigious AfricArena Johannesburg Fintech, Deep Tech, and Enterprise Summit, a key platform fostering investment and market access for Africa’s burgeoning tech ecosystem. The summit, held in collaboration with AWS Startups and 22 On Sloane, brought together global investors, industry leaders, and high-growth startups in a competitive showcase of talent and innovation.

Since its inception in 2017, AfricArena has positioned itself as a critical enabler of Africa’s startup landscape. Its model is designed to facilitate high-impact investment deal flows through a combination of tailored events, targeted interventions, and an open-source platform dedicated to the principles of open innovation and entrepreneurship. The Johannesburg summit exemplified this mission by providing an avenue for cutting-edge startups to pitch their solutions to a distinguished panel of judges.

A total of sixteen startups participated in the event, competing across various categories that reflect the diverse and evolving nature of the African tech industry. After a rigorous selection process, five outstanding startups were recognised for their excellence:

• CureRoot (South Africa) – awarded Best Deep Tech and AI Startup

• eQub (Ethiopia) – named Best Fintech Startup

• Funti3r (South Africa) – honoured with Best SaaS Startup

• Loop (South Africa) – recognised as Best Agnostic Startup

• SB Card (South Africa) – awarded Most Promising Entrepreneur

These winners have secured eligibility for up to $25,000 in AWS Activate credits, a crucial resource that will support their continued growth and scalability. Furthermore, they have advanced to the grand finale at the highly anticipated AfricArena Grand Summit, scheduled to take place in Cape Town in December.

The recognition of these startups underscores the dynamism and ingenuity that characterise Africa’s tech ecosystem. South Africa’s CureRoot, which received the accolade for Best Deep Tech and AI Startup, has been at the forefront of developing advanced technological solutions that leverage artificial intelligence to address pressing challenges. Funti3r, also from South Africa, secured the Best SaaS Startup award for its contributions to the software-as-a-service industry, an area experiencing rapid expansion across the continent.

Ethiopia’s eQub was celebrated as the Best Fintech Startup, reflecting the increasing prominence of fintech solutions in Africa’s digital economy. With financial inclusion remaining a key driver of economic growth, fintech innovations such as those pioneered by eQub are instrumental in bridging gaps in financial accessibility.

The Best Agnostic Startup award went to Loop, a South African company whose innovative business model and broad applicability across industries earned it a place among the winners. Meanwhile, SB Card, also from South Africa, was recognised as the Most Promising Entrepreneur, a testament to the company’s potential for future growth and impact.

AfricArena’s role in fostering such innovation cannot be overstated. The platform has continually provided African startups with unparalleled access to investors, mentors, and business development opportunities. By hosting summits in key regional hubs, AfricArena creates a pipeline for early-stage companies to connect with the resources they need to scale.

The upcoming AfricArena Grand Summit in Cape Town promises to be a landmark event, bringing together a curated selection of Africa’s most promising startups with investors from around the globe. The five startups that triumphed in Johannesburg will have another opportunity to showcase their solutions on an even bigger stage, further amplifying their reach and potential.

As Africa’s startup ecosystem continues to expand, initiatives such as AfricArena serve as critical accelerators of growth, investment, and innovation. With increasing global interest in African technology ventures, the continent is poised to cement its status as a hub for groundbreaking entrepreneurial activity.
