The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) leaders have extended invitations to six new countries to join their ranks. Among these new entrants, Ethiopia stands out as a notable addition, with its Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressing optimism that the country’s participation will further fortify the burgeoning South-South cooperation framework.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in a resounding endorsement of the BRICS mechanism, stated that the acceptance and influence of BRICS on the global stage have been steadily growing. This, he affirmed, has prompted countries around the world to express interest in becoming part of this influential grouping.
The invitation to Ethiopia and five other nations – Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – was met with enthusiastic support from the existing BRICS member countries. Prime Minister Ahmed specifically lauded the five members for their backing of Ethiopia’s accession, highlighting the collective spirit of cooperation that defines the BRICS alliance.
Ethiopia’s impending membership, which takes effect on January 1, 2024, has garnered attention not only for its potential to strengthen the South-South cooperation but also for its implications on the country’s role in multilateral diplomacy. The Ethiopian Prime Minister conveyed the nation’s commitment to not only be a representative voice for Africa but to also actively expand its contributions and influence on the global diplomatic stage.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, during a press conference at the 15th BRICS Summit, announced the effective date of the six new countries’ membership. The move signifies a major milestone in the evolution of BRICS, as the group broadens its horizons to incorporate diverse perspectives and contribute to a more multipolar world.
As Ethiopia prepares to embark on this new chapter of international engagement, it joins hands with nations across the globe to shape the future of cooperation and diplomacy. With the BRICS alliance poised for expansion, the international community eagerly anticipates the positive impact of this transformative move.
