LONDON, (SATSports) – England has finally dispelled its mental demons to score two late goals and overcome Germany at Wembley in a Euro 2020 blockbuster.
England had not beaten Germany in a knock-out match at a major tournament since the World Cup final of 1966, but Gareth Southgate’s side made it’s own history on Wednesday morning.
Raheem Sterling scored his third goal of the tournament in the 75th minute thanks to some slick build-up play invoving Sterling himself, Harry Kane, substitute Jack Grealish and Luke Shaw.
Kane, who had been criticised for his lack of involvement — and goals — in the group stages, then scored England’s second with a close-range header.
Before Kane’s goal, Germany had a tremendous chance to level, with Thomas Müller sent clear through on goal. The veteran striker somehow managed to shoot wide, though, with only Jordan Pickford to beat.
Before the goals, the match had been a tense affair, with Germany having the edge in possession and chances at a premium.
The match swung in England’s favour with the introduction of Grealish in the 69th minute, with the midfielder providing the cohesion in attack that England had been missing.
England will face either Sweden or Ukraine in the quarter-final in Rome, in what will be the only match of the tournament they will play away from Wembley.
