New York based African electronic music movement and record label DESCENDANTS has launched its 2026 African tour, taking a cross section of the continent’s dance music sounds to audiences in South Africa, Mozambique and Kenya. The tour opened in Johannesburg on Sunday, 11 October, with a showcase at Truth Nightclub in Midrand featuring an extensive line up led by South African house music icon Sun El Musician. The event also featured Boddhi Satva, Drega, Goldmax, W4DE, Rosetta D33P, Jnr SA and Calvin Fallo.
The opening event sets the tone for a tour built around the diversity of African electronic music, bringing together sounds including Afro house, Afro tech, Amapiano and Gqom under a platform that connects artists, audiences and music communities across borders. For DESCENDANTS, the continental tour extends a movement rooted in African dance music but operating from New York, positioning the genre’s different expressions within an international cultural conversation. Its approach brings together established names and a broader range of electronic music artists, reflecting the variety of sounds shaping contemporary African club culture.
Following the Johannesburg launch, the tour will return to South Africa for a Cape Town event scheduled for Saturday, 14 November. From there, the movement will travel beyond South Africa, with dates planned in Maputo, Mozambique, on 21 November and Nairobi, Kenya, on 28 November. The schedule places the tour across four cities in three countries over several weeks, creating opportunities to connect audiences in different markets through a shared interest in African electronic music.
The inclusion of Maputo and Nairobi also extends the programme beyond South Africa’s established house and dance music circuits. While the tour brings together genres with distinct histories and audiences, its wider premise is that African electronic music is not a single sound but a collection of evolving musical traditions shaped by different places, producers and communities.
Afro house and Afro tech have developed international audiences through their fusion of electronic production with African rhythms and musical influences. Amapiano has expanded from South Africa into clubs and popular music markets worldwide, while Gqom has established a distinctive identity through its hard hitting rhythms and origins in Durban’s dance music scene. Bringing these sounds together creates a platform for exploring their connections without erasing their individual character. It also reflects the role of touring and live events in introducing artists to audiences beyond their home markets.
DESCENDANTS’ 2026 African tour continues in Cape Town on 14 November, followed by Maputo on 21 November and Nairobi on 28 November. With its programme spanning several cities and electronic music traditions, the tour places African dance music at the centre of a cross border cultural exchange, connecting artists and audiences through sounds that continue to evolve beyond national boundaries.
