Zimbabwe made a brisk and clinical start to their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign, defeating Oman by eight wickets with 39 balls to spare at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The platform was laid by a dominant pace performance that restricted Oman to 103 all out in 19.5 overs, before a measured chase carried Zimbabwe to 106 for 2 in 13.3 overs, with Brian Bennett finishing unbeaten on 48.
The match swung decisively in the powerplay. Oman lost four wickets inside the first six overs, slipping to 23 for 4 as Zimbabwe’s seamers extracted bounce and movement with disciplined hard lengths.
Blessing Muzarabani led the charge, taking 3 for 16 and setting the tone with an aggressive new-ball spell. Richard Ngarava offered control and threat from the other end, returning 3 for 17, while Brad Evans closed out the innings efficiently with 3 for 18.
Oman were unable to build sustained partnerships. Vinayak Shukla top-scored with 28 and Sufyan Mehmood added 25, but Zimbabwe’s bowlers removed key batters at regular intervals to prevent any momentum and keep the total in check.

Chasing 104, Zimbabwe were briefly checked when Mehmood struck twice, raising a short-lived possibility of pressure. Bennett, however, remained composed, rotating strike smartly and punishing errors to ensure the pursuit never drifted.
Brendan Taylor provided valuable support with a brisk 31 before retiring hurt at 98 for 2, a minor concern, though by that stage the result was effectively settled. Zimbabwe completed the chase with captain Sikandar Raza at the crease, sealing an emphatic opening win and a useful early boost to their net run rate.
Zimbabwe will be wary of reading too much into one match, but the clarity of the performance, early wickets, tight control, and a low-risk chase was an encouraging first step in tournament conditions that often reward exactly that kind of discipline.
