Botswana Diamonds Embrace AI for Enhanced Mineral Exploration Efforts

Botswana Diamonds (BOD), a prominent player listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE), has announced its adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the search for new diamond deposits and other minerals.

The decision comes as a strategic response to the vastness of BOD’s mineral database in Botswana, which spans an impressive 95,000 square kilometers. Recognizing the challenge posed by the sheer volume of data, BOD Chairman John Teeling emphasized the need for a more efficient analysis process. With 375,000 kilometers of airborne geophysical data, 606 ground geophysical surveys, 228,000 soil sample results, 32,000 drill hole logs, and a staggering 380 gigabytes of data spread across 260,000 files, the task of traditional human analysis became untenable.

Teeling underscored the significance of incorporating AI techniques to tackle this data deluge effectively. By harnessing computer-based large data models and AI algorithms, BOD aims to expedite the analysis process, enabling rapid insights into potential mineral deposits. These AI systems leverage both theoretical knowledge and factual data from the company’s extensive database to generate accurate models for exploration.

Central to BOD’s AI-driven exploration strategy is the utilization of Planetary AI Ltd’s Xplore mineral prospectivity technology. Developed in collaboration with International Geoscience Services Limited, this innovative system combines semantic technology with machine learning capabilities. Semantic technology, a branch of AI, focuses on interpreting and representing the meaning of data in a machine-readable format, enhancing the efficiency of analysis.

Teeling highlighted the system’s ability to emulate the functions of a geologist, albeit with enhanced speed and efficiency. Through AI processing, vast datasets are scrutinized to identify logical gaps, which the system then learns to rectify. This iterative process is poised to unveil fresh insights and identify drillable targets that were previously overlooked, ultimately optimizing exploration efforts.

The implications of BOD’s adoption of AI extend beyond the realm of diamond exploration, with potential applications in mineral prospecting more broadly. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, BOD is poised to maintain its position at the forefront of mineral exploration in Botswana and beyond.

As the mining industry continues to embrace technological advancements, BOD’s pioneering use of AI underscores the transformative potential of innovation in unlocking new opportunities in mineral exploration. With the promise of enhanced efficiency and accuracy, the integration of AI heralds a new era in the quest for untapped mineral resources.
