Almasi Collaborative Arts Brings Ibsen’s A Doll’s House to Life in Harare

Harare’s theatre scene is set for an engaging and thought-provoking experience as Almasi Collaborative Arts presents a staged reading of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. Under the direction of the talented Chelsy G Maumbe, this production continues Almasi’s mission to elevate dramatic literacy and expose artists and audiences to timeless classical works.

The staged reading, scheduled for Saturday, 22 February at Reps Theatre, promises to offer an intimate and immersive engagement with one of modern drama’s most enduring masterpieces. A Doll’s House, first performed in 1879, remains a powerful exploration of identity, autonomy, and societal expectations. Its themes of self-liberation and personal awakening continue to resonate across generations and cultures, making it a fitting choice for Almasi’s commitment to intellectually rigorous theatre.

Chelsy G Maumbe, a director deeply engaged with Almasi’s vision, brings her passion for storytelling to this production. Her approach is expected to bring fresh energy to Ibsen’s play, allowing audiences to experience the text in a way that is both true to its origins and reflective of contemporary conversations on gender and independence.

“We are excited to have Chelsy G Maumbe at the helm of this workshop,” said Gideon J Wabvuta, Almasi Collaborative Arts’ Programmes Director. “Her passion for rigorous storytelling and her experience working with Almasi make her the perfect fit for this project.”

The staged reading is a hallmark of Almasi’s programming, serving as both an artistic and educational endeavour. By stripping the play down to its core elements, “words, voices, and performance” this format fosters an appreciation for the craft of storytelling and the depth of Ibsen’s writing. It also provides a valuable learning opportunity for actors, offering them a platform to hone their skills in a setting that prioritises textual exploration and character development.

Founded by acclaimed actress and playwright Danai Gurira, Almasi Collaborative Arts has become a vital force in Zimbabwe’s creative landscape. The organisation is dedicated to nurturing artistic excellence by providing access to training, mentorship, and exposure to world-class theatre. With a strong emphasis on dramatic literacy, Almasi continues to challenge and inspire both artists and audiences.

This upcoming event at Reps Theatre is an invitation to theatre enthusiasts and newcomers alike to experience A Doll’s House in a unique and intimate setting. As the audience delves into Ibsen’s world of suppressed desires and societal constraints, they will also witness the strength of Zimbabwean talent bringing this timeless story to life.

With limited seating available, those interested are encouraged to attend this rare opportunity to engage with one of theatre’s most compelling works. The performance begins at 2:30 pm, promising an afternoon of drama, insight, and discovery.
