Algeria’s Mahrez helps Man City qualify for Champions League semifinals

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 28: Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City is seen with the match ball after scoring a hat-trick during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Burnley at Etihad Stadium on November 28, 2020 in Manchester, England. (SATSports) – Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez was on target as Manchester City continued their quest for a maiden Champions League title with a 2-1 win away to Borussia Dortmund in their quarterfinal second leg on Wednesday.

Jude Bellingham gave the German side the lead in the 14th minute with an excellent finish from just inside the box.

City leveled the game in the 54th minute when Mahrez converted a spot-kick after Emre Can was penalized for a handball in the penalty area.

Phil Foden scored the winning goal in the 75th minute after he scored with a stunning left-foot strike from just outside the penalty area.

The win sent City through to the semifinals courtesy of a 4-2 aggregate score where they will meet last season’s runners-up Paris Saint-Germain.

The French side knocked out defending champions Bayern Munich despite losing 1-0 in France on Tuesday with Cameroon’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting netting the game’s only goal.

Bayern’s win meant the tie ended 3-3 but PSG advanced on account of the away goals rule as they had won the first leg 3-2 in Germany.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s goalless draw at home to Real Madrid saw a trio of high-profile African stars crash out of the competition with the English side losing 3-1 on aggregate.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita were unable to inspire Liverpool stage an inspirational comeback such as the one in 2019 which saw them overturn a 3-0 deficit against Barcelona at this stage of the competition.

Senegal’s Edouard Mendy and Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech will be in the last four after Chelsea defeated F.C. Porto 2-1 on aggregate regardless of the 1-0 loss on Tuesday.

Chelsea will face 13-time winners Real Madrid in the second semifinal tie.

The first legs will take place April 27/28 while the second legs will take place on May 4/5.
