LUSAKA, (The Southern African Times) – Construction works of communications towers meant to boost mobile phone coverage in rural areas of Zambia has reached an advanced stage, a state-run firm responsible for the implementation of the project has said.
Sydney Mupeta, Zamtel chief executive officer, said the project was nearing completion with 790 out of 1,009 towers installed so far.
The official was speaking during the installation of two towers in Petauke district in eastern Zambia, according to a release.
He said the completion of the project will result in over 90 percent of the country having adequate communication coverage.
According to him, the remaining towers will be installed before the end of this year, adding that improved access to communication services in rural areas will help transform livelihoods.
In 2017, Zambia and China signed a framework agreement for phase two of the construction of communication towers. The construction of the towers is being implemented by China’s telecommunication giant Huawei Technologies.
