Mozambique Fashion Week has opened its landmark twentieth anniversary edition in Maputo, marking two decades of creativity, cultural pride and industry growth. Running from the 1st to the 6th of December at the Centro Cultural Mocambique China, the event has transformed the capital into a gathering place for designers, artists and innovators from across the continent and beyond.
This year’s theme, “The Story of a Revolution”, captures the journey of a platform that began as a local showcase and steadily grew into one of Africa’s most dynamic fashion stages. Over the years it has not only introduced new designers to regional and international markets but has also shaped conversations on sustainability, identity and economic opportunity. The anniversary edition builds on this legacy by placing renewed emphasis on collaboration, cultural storytelling and long term sector development.

A major highlight of this year’s programme is the launch of the Mozambique Fashion Forum. Opening on 1 December and continuing today, the Forum is a national platform designed to strengthen the entire fashion value chain. Designers, textile producers, entrepreneurs, retailers, government representatives and international organisations are gathering to exchange ideas on building a more resilient and competitive industry. Discussions span agriculture, textiles, manufacturing, retail, environmental responsibility and creative education, all aimed at positioning Mozambique as a serious contender within the regional creative economy.
Celebrations this year also include the debut of the Mozambique Fashion Awards, a platform honouring the individuals and collectives shaping the country’s creative identity. Designers, artisans, photographers, models, media professionals and sustainable brands will be recognised for their contribution to cultural heritage and economic progress. The awards highlight the growing influence of Mozambican talent, whose work increasingly resonates beyond national borders.
Emerging designers remain at the heart of Mozambique Fashion Week. The MFW Young Designers programme, long known for uncovering exceptional new voices, is taking centre stage once again with mentorship and high visibility runway opportunities for early career creatives. Many of the country’s celebrated designers began their journey through this programme, and its continued expansion reflects the importance of nurturing the next generation.
One of the most beloved traditions of the event, MFW Kids, will also return later this week. Young models aged between five and fourteen will take to the runway in a colourful celebration of imagination and confidence. The segment is a reminder of how fashion can inspire creativity and self expression long before designers reach professional stages.
Mozambique Fashion Week now stands as a cultural and economic force. It has consistently promoted tourism, supported local artisans, and championed sustainability through environmentally conscious initiatives. For many across the creative sector, the event has become a symbol of progress, weaving together the work of tailors, textile artists, educators and cultural organisers whose contributions often begin far from the runway lights.
With the twentieth anniversary edition already in full swing, the atmosphere in Maputo carries both pride and anticipation. The event underscores how fashion in Mozambique has evolved into a story of resilience and ambition. Through fresh initiatives, global partnerships and a deep commitment to nurturing talent, Mozambique Fashion Week continues to show that fashion is not only an art form but a catalyst for connection, opportunity and national confidence.
