Gemfields Nears Completion of Expanded Ruby Processing Plant in Mozambique

Gemfields Group Limited has reported that its second processing plant at the Montepuez Ruby Mine (MRM) in Mozambique is now 95% complete, with the commencement of ruby production scheduled for August 2025. The ambitious infrastructure project is designed to triple the mine’s ore processing capacity from 200 to 600 tonnes per hour, significantly boosting the efficiency and throughput of one of the world’s most prolific ruby sources.

Despite maintaining budgetary discipline, the project has experienced a series of logistical and administrative delays, shifting the full operational completion timeline to September 2025. According to Gemfields, setbacks arose due to challenges in securing work permits for specialised personnel required to install critical electrical components, damage sustained by a vital transformer during transportation, and continued disruptions caused by illegal mining activities in northern Mozambique, where MRM is situated.

The Montepuez Ruby Mine, a joint venture between Gemfields and local partner Mwiriti Limitada, represents a cornerstone of Mozambique’s burgeoning gemstone sector. Since operations commenced, the mine has significantly contributed to both national revenue and employment, while positioning Mozambique as a global leader in ethically sourced coloured gemstones.

In addition to developments in Mozambique, Gemfields has resumed limited operations at its Kagem Emerald Mine in Zambia. As of early May, controlled production has recommenced at two points within the Chama pit, with minimal waste removal. A cautious and measured ramp-up of mining activity is scheduled to begin in July, although the company does not foresee a return to full-scale operations in the immediate term.

Moreover, Gemfields continues to assess strategic options for its wholly-owned luxury brand, Fabergé. This follows the successful conclusion of a rights issue which temporarily suspended efforts to re-evaluate the brand’s market positioning and potential partnerships.

The developments at Montepuez and Kagem underscore Gemfields’ broader commitment to sustainable growth and responsible mining practices across sub-Saharan Africa. The company has maintained its emphasis on transparency, community engagement, and long-term investment in infrastructure, aligning its operations with both local development goals and international standards for ethical sourcing.
