In the dazzling world of music, where attention is often drawn to those in the spotlight, there are remarkable individuals working behind the scenes, shaping careers and transforming the industry. One such trailblazer is Taponeswa Mavunga, a Zimbabwean music executive whose journey and impact were recently celebrated in the Queens of Music docu-series. Premiering on the BET International YouTube channel just over a week ago, the series honours extraordinary Black women who are redefining the music landscape.
Mavunga’s feature in the documentary is as inspiring as it is revelatory. Speaking with warmth and authenticity, she reflects on her remarkable journey, which began in the most unassuming way. “I started as a receptionist at Warner Studios,” she shares, recounting how what seemed like a small beginning became the foundation for a groundbreaking career. For many, such a role might have marked the limit of their ambitions, but for Mavunga, it was only the beginning of a meteoric rise.
The docu-series shines a spotlight on her evolution into one of the most influential figures in global music. Over the years, Mavunga has forged a path defined by resilience, creativity, and a deep passion for empowering artists. Her tenure as Head of Talent and Music for Viacom Africa stands as a defining chapter in her career. In this role, she was instrumental in managing brands such as MTV Base, BET Africa, and Nickelodeon, where she championed African artists and celebrated the continent’s rich cultural heritage.
Her ability to nurture talent and craft strategic narratives carried her to Columbia UK, where she worked with some of the music world’s biggest names, including Wizkid, Davido, Childish Gambino, Koffee, and Rosalia. Known for her innovative approach and tireless dedication, Mavunga’s work left an indelible mark on these artists’ global success. In 2018, her contributions to the industry earned her a place in the Women in Music Roll of Honour, a prestigious accolade recognising her outstanding achievements in a field where such recognition is hard-earned.
Today, Mavunga holds the esteemed position of Director of Africa at Sony Music UK, a role created specifically to bridge the gap between Africa’s vibrant music scene and the global market. Her responsibilities include amplifying the presence of UK-signed artists across Africa while identifying and nurturing the continent’s burgeoning talent. Sean Watson, Managing Director of Sony Music Entertainment Africa, describes her as a “visionary executive” with a passion for connecting local and global talent.
As Queens of Music highlights, Mavunga is not alone in her pursuit of excellence. The documentary also features other Black women luminaries whose contributions have shaped the music industry, including Afryea Henry- Fontaine who is the Director at The Black Music Coalition and CoFounder of The Debrief, Dellessa James, the Senior artist relations manager at Amazon Music UK, Kehinde Olarimoye (Music Publisher and Consultant), Neicee Oakley (Tour Manager and Creative Producer), Stephanie Achigbu (Music Marketing Lead), Jade Richardson (A&R Warner Records/Founder of iLuvLive), Jay Davidson (Music, TV, and Film Executive), and Sandra Scott (Label Consultant) among others. Together, these women represent a powerful force, redefining the possibilities for Black women in music.
