Fidelity Gold Refinery Private Limited has unveiled a groundbreaking Geo-Identification (GI) system aimed at tracing gold production from its source to its final destination. This innovative approach seeks to curb gold leakages and enhance transparency within Zimbabwe’s gold mining industry.

Speaking on behalf of Fidelity Gold Refinery, Secretary General of the Chamber of Mines, Munyaradzi Hwengwere, underscored the importance of the GI system as part of the company’s broader reforms to improve gold monitoring. “Our goal is to establish a robust mechanism that can effectively monitor gold from production to deposit. This system will not only secure our gold reserves but also ensure that all gold production activities are conducted within the legal framework,” said Hwengwere.
The GI system employs geo-location technology to attach tags to gold, providing proof of its origin and tracking its journey through the supply chain. “This method is expected to significantly reduce instances of illegal gold mining and smuggling, which have plagued the industry for years. By ensuring that every piece of gold is traceable, the GI system promises to enhance accountability and regulatory compliance across the sector,” Hwengwere added.
However, Hwengwere acknowledged the challenges in implementing the GI system, particularly regarding compliance among artisanal miners and small-scale producers. “These groups often operate outside the formal economy, making it difficult to enforce regulations and ensure traceability. There is a need for targeted interventions to address these challenges. Artisanal miners contribute a significant portion of the country’s gold output, but their activities are hard to trace. We need to develop strategies that bring these miners into the formal sector and eliminate child labor,” he emphasized.
The introduction of the GI system by Fidelity Gold Refinery marks a significant step towards a more transparent and accountable gold mining industry in Zimbabwe. While challenges remain, especially with artisanal and illegal miners, the system’s potential to transform gold traceability and reduce leakages is undeniable. Continued efforts to integrate artisanal miners into the formal sector and eliminate illegal mining practices will be crucial for the success of this initiative.
