The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Rwandan government have recently announced a groundbreaking partnership that is set to reshape the landscape of the sport on the continent. This initiative, the African Football League (AFL), promises to bring together the best football clubs from across Africa in a competition that aims to captivate audiences and promote tourism throughout the continent.
Scheduled to kick off on October 20, 2023, in the vibrant city of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, the AFL will draw teams from every corner of Africa, setting the stage for an annual showdown of skill and passion. This collaboration is a testament to the growing potential and ambition within African football.
The joint statement released by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) emphasises the broader goals of this partnership. Veron Mosengo-Omba, CAF Secretary General, expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting Rwanda as a symbol of African football’s growth and potential. He stated, “Together, we will unlock new horizons for the beautiful game on our continent, showcasing its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and the passion of our fans.”

She sees the partnership as a unique opportunity for African talents, especially young footballers and local leagues, to gain global recognition. Munyangaju stated, “We look forward to having more Rwandans showcase their footballing talent on this platform that reaches millions of global audiences and highlights Africa as a football powerhouse.”
The participating teams in the inaugural AFL tournament have been carefully selected based on CAF rankings. These clubs include football giants such as Al Ahly from Egypt, Wydad AC from Morocco, Esperance Sportive de Tunis from Tunisia, TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Enyimba from Nigeria, Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa, ATL. Petro Luanda from Angola, and Simba FC from Tanzania. The inclusion of these prominent clubs ensures high-quality competition and a broader fan base.
Beyond the thrilling matches, the CAF and Rwandan government partnership aims to drive youth football development initiatives across the continent. The AFL will collaborate with the Rwandan Ministry of Sports and the local Football Federation (FERWAFA) to create opportunities for young players. This includes the development of a local youth league, providing a crucial platform for nurturing the football stars of the future.
The AFL represents not only an exciting sports competition but also a vehicle for showcasing Africa’s rich diversity and culture. It promises to attract global attention, not only for its football prowess but also for its captivating landscapes and passionate fans. This partnership between CAF and the Rwandan government is poised to shape the future of African football, promoting the continent’s potential on a global scale.
As the AFL makes its debut, the eyes of the footballing world will be fixed on Africa, where a new chapter in the sport’s history is about to be written. With a commitment to both the game and the continent’s growth, this partnership is poised to be a game-changer in African football, creating a lasting impact on the sport and tourism.
