Arab League Welcomes African Union’s Permanent Membership in G20

In a historic move during the inaugural session of the G20 summit held in New Delhi, India, the Group of 20 (G20) welcomed the African Union (AU) as a permanent member, marking a significant step toward greater representation within the international community. The Arab League (AL) has warmly applauded this decision, expressing hopes that they too will one day attain the same status.

AL Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit released a statement on Sunday, emphasizing the importance of this development. He described the decision to include the AU as a “positive step” that holds the promise of mutual benefits for both the AU and G20 members, while also bolstering Africa’s role in global economic development.

The move to grant permanent membership to the AU within the G20 is seen as a testament to the increasing recognition of Africa’s growing significance on the global stage. Aboul-Gheit stated that this decision would empower Africa to play a more active role in addressing critical global challenges, including climate change, energy security, food security, and other pressing issues.

Moreover, the AL Secretary-General voiced his optimism that the Arab League’s aspiration to join the G20 would find approval. This reflects a broader sentiment among Arab League member states to participate actively in shaping global policies and fostering international cooperation.

As the world looks toward a more inclusive and cooperative future, the admission of the African Union as a permanent member in the G20 signifies a significant stride towards representing diverse voices and perspectives in addressing global challenges. The Arab League’s hopeful anticipation for a similar status underscores the evolving dynamics of international diplomacy and cooperation.
