Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, South Africa’s Minister of Electricity, has called on the private sector to support the government’s efforts to build industrial capacity and generate energy to address the power shortages facing the country. Speaking at the Solar & Future Energy Show Africa 2023 in Johannesburg, Ramokgopa urged businesses to take advantage of opportunities presented by the transition from reliance on fossil fuels to clean energy.
Ramokgopa noted that the South African government is working to remove constraints that impede businesses, and is strengthening the grid to ensure reliable energy supply. He encouraged the private sector to contribute to the country’s overall growth by investing in energy generation.
“There are possibilities for you to make money and contribute to the overall growth of South Africa. It is you who will help us resolve these challenges,” said Ramokgopa.
South Africa has been facing power shortages due to aging infrastructure and insufficient investment in new power generation capacity. The country is now looking to increase investment in clean energy sources such as solar and wind power, and to encourage private sector participation in energy generation.
