President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil unveiled his commitment to expanding trade with Africa during his speech at the XV BRICS Summit. This commitment comes as a cornerstone of his ambitious Growth Acceleration Plan (PAC), aimed at revitalizing the Brazilian economy through robust public and private investments. The plan also lays the foundation for the energy transition, with a strong focus on renewable energy sources.
President Lula, addressing the Business Forum of the XV BRICS Summit, extended a warm invitation to African investors to partake in the PAC. He emphasized that the PAC offers investment opportunities not only to African nations but also to fellow BRICS members including India, China, Russia, and South Africa.
“The new PAC, introduced just two weeks ago, signifies a resurgence of stalled projects, expedited ongoing initiatives, and the initiation of new projects. With numerous enticing prospects, we envisage mobilizing a staggering $340 billion for investments. This substantial commitment will prioritize solar, wind, biomass, ethanol, and biodiesel energy generation,” President Lula stated.
Highlighting the imperative of enhancing trade relationships with Africa, President Lula decried the decline in Brazil’s trade with the continent. He asserted, “The decline in Brazil’s trade with Africa, plummeting by a third by 2022 compared to the promising $30 billion in 2013, is simply unacceptable.” With a veiled reference to his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, President Lula expressed his determination to reestablish trade agreements between Brazil and African nations.
The Brazilian leader also underscored the pivotal role of the recently established BRICS Development Bank in fostering effective collaboration among emerging economies. He accentuated the importance of bolstering exchange mechanisms using local currencies, and tackling various financing challenges that are integral to sustainable development.
President Lula’s vision extends beyond trade and investments. He highlighted the need for consolidating integration, cooperation, and inclusiveness across diverse domains, particularly benefiting the most vulnerable segments of society. This strategic approach is set to invigorate partnerships within the BRICS bloc and beyond.
President Lula’s resurgence onto the global stage comes with a clear message: Brazil is recommitting to its engagement with the African continent and reigniting cooperation within the BRICS alliance. As the world navigates through economic complexities and environmental imperatives, President Lula’s multifaceted approach stands poised to usher in a new era of collaboration, growth, and shared prosperity.
