U.S sees the highest voter turnout in more than a century, as Donald Trump faces Joe Biden .

More than 160 million Americans voted in the presidential elections, producing the highest turnout rate in 120 years, according to preliminary estimates from the US Elections Project.

At 66.9%, the turnout rate of the voting-eligible population was the highest since 1900, the website’s data indicates.

That year, Republican President William McKinley defeated his Democratic challenger, William Jennings Bryan, on a turnout of 73.7%. Unlike 2020’s election, 1900’s produced a clear-cut result.

“The 2020 presidential election had the highest turnout rate in 120 years,” the founder of the US Elections Project, professor Michael McDonald, tweeted on Wednesday.

“There is still a fair amount of guesswork involving outstanding ballots to be counted. I will continue to refine these estimates over the coming weeks.”

This year, election observers had predicted a high turnout driven in part by a surge in mail-in ballots and early voters mindful of the threat posed by coronavirus. More than 100 million people, a record, voted early, it has been estimated.

After winning the Presidency Biden, in a statement, said he was humbled by the victory and it was time for the battered nation to set aside its differences.

“It’s time for America to unite. And to heal,” he said.

“With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation,” Biden said. “There’s nothing we can’t do if we do it together.”

Biden was on track to win the national popular vote by more than 4 million, a margin that could grow as ballots continue to be counted.

Democrat Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States on Saturday, positioning himself to lead a nation gripped by a historic pandemic and a confluence of economic and social turmoil.

His victory came after more than three days of uncertainty as election officials sorted through a surge of mail-in votes that delayed the processing of some ballots. Biden crossed 270 Electoral College votes with a win in Pennsylvania.

Trump refused to concede, threatening further legal action on ballot counting.

Biden, 77, staked his candidacy less on any distinctive political ideology than on galvanizing a broad coalition of voters around the notion that Trump posed an existential threat to American democracy. The strategy proved effective, resulting in pivotal victories in Michigan and Wisconsin as well as Pennsylvania, onetime Democratic bastions that had flipped to Trump in 2016.

Joe Biden stands on the brink of becoming the next president of the United States.

He addressed the American people from Delaware on Friday night, urging them to remain calm and to stay together. He said: “Democracy works. Your vote will be counted. The purpose of our politics is not unending warfare.”

It comes at the end of another day of vote counting and frustration across America, with Donald Trump clinging to power despite the Democratic nominee’s lead increasing in critical swing states.

A US Supreme Court justice has denied a request by Pennsylvania’s Republicans to immediately halt the counting of ballots arriving after Election Day – referring the challenge to the full court for a ruling on Saturday.

Samuel Alito ordered Pennsylvania in the meantime to continue keeping the late-arriving ballots, affirming a decision already made by the state’s top elections official.

  • Arizona – 90 per cent reported, Biden lead (0.9 per cent). More results due on Saturday

Joe Biden took the lead over President Donald Trump in Georgia early Friday as vote counting continued, with little more than 900 votes separating the candidates after about five million votes were cast in the state.

The Associated Press has not declared a winner in Georgia because the race between the Republican president and the Democratic nominee remains too early to call.

Biden took the lead when results were updated early Friday by Clayton County, part of which is in Georgia’s 5th Congressional District, long held by Democrat Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights leader who died in July.

ABC, CBS and NBC all cut away from President Donald Trump on Thursday as he spoke from the White House to make an unfounded accusation that the presidential election was being stolen from him.

Trump had tried to commandeer the nation’s airwaves at a time when the evening newscasts are shown on the East Coast, after a day when the slow drip of vote counting revealed his leads in Pennsylvania and Georgia dwindling.

MSNBC’s Brian Williams also interrupted the president. Fox News Channel and CNN aired the president’s full address, after which CNN’s Anderson Cooper said Trump was “like an obese turtle on his back, flailing in the hot sun realizing his time was over.”

President Donald Trump has fumed in private and tweeted his grievances in all caps.

As votes continued to be counted and Democrat Joe Biden edged closer to victory, Trump lashed out Thursday evening in a performance that suggested he knew his prospects for a second term were slipping away.

“If you count the legal votes, I easily win. If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us,” Trump claimed. In fact, there is no evidence that any votes cast illegally are being counted or that the process is unfair and corrupt.

“This is a case when they are trying to steal an election, they are trying to rig an election,” said Trump of Democrats, whom he accused of corruption while providing no evidence.

He made similar claims about election integrity during the 2016 campaign, which he went on to win. This time, he was speaking not as a candidate, but as the sitting president of the United States.

Biden took a different tack, speaking briefly to reporters after attending a COVID-19 briefing to declare that “each ballot must be counted.”

“I ask everyone to stay calm. The process is working,” said Biden. “It is the will of the voters. No one, not anyone else who chooses the president of the United States of America.”

What will a Joe Biden win mean for Africa?

LONDON, (The Southern African Times) – Perhaps the most memorable demonstration of Joe Biden’s position and beliefs on Africa is the 1986 Senate engagements on the issue of Apartheid South Africa. The then 43-year-old senator spoke passionately and questioned the US policy highlighting the need to end apartheid which was a repressive to Black South Africans.

With media houses and analysts tightly positioned on the assertion that the Election is too close to call, the numbers are increasingly pointing towards a Biden Victory. As of Thursday morning Associated Press had Biden at 264 Electoral votes placing him only 6 electoral votes away from the required 270 while Trump was at 214.

Joe Biden’s campaign is expressing optimism at the ultimate result of the election but warning supporters to “stay patient and stay calm” as vote counting continues.

Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said Thursday on a briefing call with reporters that “the story of today is going to be a very positive story” for their campaign, but cautioned that as the counting continues, “we need to allow it to get done and get done well.”

A judge in Georgia has dismissed a lawsuit by the state Republican Party and President Donald Trump’s campaign that asked him to ensure a coastal county was following state laws on processing absentee ballots.

Chatham County Superior Court Judge James Bass did not provide an explanation for his decision Thursday at the close of a roughly one-hour hearing. The county includes the heavily Democratic city of Savannah.

Democrat Joe Biden is pushing closer to the 270 Electoral College votes needed to carry the White House, securing victories in the “blue wall” battlegrounds of Wisconsin and Michigan and narrowing President Donald Trump’s path.

With just a handful of states still up for grabs, Trump tried to press his ase in court in some key swing states. It was unclear if any of his campaign’s legal maneuvering over balloting would succeed in shifting the race in his favor.

As Democrat Joe Biden inches closer to the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House, President Donald Trump’s campaign put into action the legal strategy the president had signaled for weeks: attacking the integrity of the voting process in states where the result could mean his defeat.

Democrats scoffed at the legal challenges the president’s campaign filed Wednesday in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia. In spite of the aggressive move, the flurry of court action did not seem obviously destined to impact the election’s outcome.

COURT CHALLENGE: Trump says he’ll take the presidential election to the Supreme Court, but it’s unclear what he means in a country in which vote tabulations routinely continue beyond Election Day and states largely set the rules for when the count has to end. Trump says “we want all voting to stop,” but the voting is over. It’s only counting that is taking place across the nation. No state will count absentee votes that are postmarked after Election Day. Biden’s campaign called Trump’s statement “outrageous, unprecedented, and incorrect.”

Election law expert Richard Hasen wrote in Slate on Sunday that “there has never been any basis to claim that a ballot arriving on time cannot be counted if officials cannot finish their count on election night.”

Ohio State University election law professor Edward Foley wrote on Twitter Wednesday: “The valid votes will be counted. SCOTUS would be involved only if there were votes of questionable validity that would make a difference, which might not be the case. The rule of law will determine the official winner of the popular vote in each state. Let the rule of law work.”

Democrat Joe Biden claimed he was winning the knife-edge election in  America on Wednesday, however President Donald Trump fired back by  predicting his own victory and accusing his opponent of attempting to steal the vote. 


Appearing in front of supporters in his hometown of Wilmington,  Delaware, Biden said after midnight, “We believe we are on track to win  this election.” 


“Keep the faith, guys, we’re going to win this.”

But Biden, 77, cautioned that it would take ‘a while’ to obtain final results due to the unprecedented use of mail-in ballots during the coronavirus pandemic. 

Trump tweeted his rebuttal seconds later, saying,” We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the election.”
