Tunisian President Kais Saied has removed Samir Saied from his position as Minister of Economy and Planning, as per a statement released by the presidency on Tuesday. The statement, however, does not offer any specific reasons for the dismissal.
Samir Saied, aged 66, had been serving as Minister of Economy and Planning since his appointment in October 2021, under the leadership of former Prime Minister Najla Bouden Romdhane. Notably, Prime Minister Bouden Romdhane was relieved of her duties on August 1, 2023.
As part of this unexpected shift in the government, President Saied has designated Sihem Boughdiri Nemsia, the current Minister of Finance, to take on the role of interim Minister of Economy and Planning, further emphasizing a change in key positions within the government.
Over the past few months, President Saied has made several notable dismissals, including that of a foreign minister, marking a period of significant government restructuring. The rationale behind these changes remains undisclosed.
Tunisia, which has been navigating political and economic challenges, will closely watch how these changes may impact its path forward. The international community, likewise, will be keen to observe how these political maneuvers will influence Tunisia’s economic planning and stability.
