The Southern African Times Appoints Kundai Vambe as Director of Legal, Digital Policy & International Affairs

The Southern African Times (SAT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Kundai Darlington Vambe as its new Director of Legal, Digital Policy & International Affairs, a critical executive-level position that merges SAT’s legal office with its growing mandate in global cyber policy and governance diplomacy.

This newly consolidated role reflects SAT’s continued evolution into a media institution not only reporting on the digital future of Africa — but shaping it.

Kundai Vambe’s portfolio will encompass a range of strategic responsibilities: from overseeing the organisation’s legal compliance and digital ethics frameworks, to steering its international engagements on cyber law, data protection, and global digital transformation. The role situates him as the publication’s chief legal authority while also directing its thought leadership on Africa’s position in the global digital governance ecosystem.

Prior to this appointment, Kundai served as SAT’s Head of Legal, Ethics & Digital Governance, where he played a foundational role in crafting internal compliance policies, aligning editorial processes with international media law standards, and embedding ethical technology practices across the platform.

With a legal background grounded in an LL.B from the University of London, and currently pursuing a specialist LL.M in Cybercrime, Cybersecurity and International Law through the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and University for Peace, Vambe brings academic rigour and a forward-looking perspective to the complex intersection of law, policy, and technology.

His elevation to the newly integrated role follows a broader institutional restructuring that positions SAT at the vanguard of legal-digital convergence — a move increasingly necessary as media organisations contend with new regulatory environments, artificial intelligence developments, and the global surge in digital sovereignty debates.

“We are entering a critical chapter for African media institutions. Legal clarity, digital ethics, and cyber-policy engagement are no longer optional — they are foundational,” said Kundai Vambe. “It’s a privilege to lead this intersectional agenda and represent SAT in shaping Africa’s place within the global digital order.”

As part of his global affairs remit, Vambe will lead SAT’s formal engagements with international regulatory bodies, multilateral forums, policy think tanks, and academic institutions. He will also act as a legal and strategic advisor on matters related to platform governance, data protection (including compliance with GDPR, POPIA, and other regimes), cyber diplomacy, and responsible AI.

His appointment marks a significant elevation of the legal and digital policy function within SAT — now positioned at the executive level, embedded directly in the publication’s strategic and external affairs architecture.

Farai Ian Muvuti, Chief Executive Officer of The Southern African Times, said:

“Kundai’s appointment signals more than an internal promotion — it marks a structural shift in how we understand and respond to the realities of the digital age. As a media institution serving a diverse, globally aware African audience, we must lead with compliance, governance, and vision. Kundai brings all three. He has earned the respect of his peers, the trust of our leadership, and the confidence of our international partners.”

Through this integrated directorship, SAT is poised to deepen its credibility as a policy-shaping media platform, advancing a mission grounded in legal integrity, digital innovation, and African leadership on the global stage.
