Southern Africa’s Fintech Powerhouse: Lesaka’s Acquisition of Adumo Sends Ripples Across Industry

Lincoln Mali, CEO of Lesaka Southern Africa

In a significant development for the Southern African fintech sector, Lesaka has announced its acquisition of Adumo, solidifying its position as a leading player in the region’s financial technology landscape. The deal, valued at ZAR1.59 billion (US$85.9 million), represents a strategic move towards consolidation and expansion, promising to reshape the dynamics of the startup ecosystem.

Adumo, hailed as South Africa’s premier independent payments processor, has been on an upward trajectory, bolstered by strategic acquisitions and robust growth. Since securing a US$15 million investment from IFC in 2021, the company has been actively expanding its portfolio through acquisitions of key players such as SwitchPay, WireCard, GAAP, SureSwipe, iKhokha, and other notable payment companies.

Lesaka, on the other hand, is a homegrown fintech firm leveraging proprietary banking and payment technologies to deliver innovative financial solutions to merchants and consumers across Southern Africa. The acquisition of Adumo represents a pivotal moment for Lesaka as it seeks to enhance its offerings and strengthen its market presence.

Under the terms of the deal, Adumo’s shareholders, including Apis Growth Fund I, African Rainbow Capital, IFC, and Adumo management, will receive a combination of Lesaka shares and cash. This strategic partnership will enable Lesaka to leverage Adumo’s extensive customer base, cutting-edge technology, and industry expertise to drive growth and innovation in the region.

The integration of Adumo’s operations into Lesaka’s ecosystem is expected to create synergies that will benefit both consumers and merchants. With a combined customer base of over 1.7 million active consumers and 119,000 merchants, the new entity is poised to become a powerhouse in the Southern African fintech space.

Moreover, the acquisition will significantly boost Lesaka’s transaction processing capabilities, with an estimated throughput of over ZAR250 billion per year. This enhanced scale and efficiency will enable the company to offer a wider range of financial services and drive greater value for its customers.

Commenting on the acquisition, Lincoln Mali, CEO of Lesaka Southern Africa, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome the Adumo team into the Group. Adumo’s expertise and technology will complement our existing operations, allowing us to deliver even greater value to our customers.”

Likewise, Adumo co-founder and CEO, Paul Kent, emphasized the strategic fit between the two companies, stating, “Our combined offering will significantly enhance the customer value proposition. We are excited to join forces with Lesaka and contribute to the continued success of the Lesaka story.”

With operations spanning five countries – South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Kenya – the combined entity will have a formidable presence in the region. This geographical diversity will not only enable the company to tap into new markets but also provide a solid foundation for future growth and expansion.

Furthermore, the acquisition underscores the trend of consolidation within the Southern African fintech sector. As competition intensifies and regulatory scrutiny increases, companies are increasingly turning to strategic partnerships and acquisitions to gain a competitive edge and drive innovation.

Looking ahead, Lesaka is well-positioned to capitalize on the vast opportunities offered by the Southern African fintech market. With its expanded portfolio of offerings and strengthened market position, the company is poised to emerge as a key player in the region’s digital economy, driving financial inclusion and empowerment for millions of people across Southern Africa.

In conclusion, Lesaka’s acquisition of Adumo marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the Southern African fintech landscape. By combining forces, the two companies are poised to create a powerhouse that will shape the future of financial services in the region for years to come.
